ISSA, the Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association (formerly known as the International Sanitary Supply Association) is an international association of more than 9,000 companies in the professional cleaning industry. ISSA's member organizations include distributors, manufacturers, manufacturer representatives, building service contractors, in-house cleaning professionals, residential cleaning professionals, and associated service firms.

ISSA was founded in the United States in 1923 as the National Sanitary Supply Association by Alfred Richter. Richter formed the organization to provide a meeting place for successful distributors, drawn from various metropolitan cities, to exchange ideas that would be beneficial to all. [1] [2] As its membership grew internationally, the association changed its name to the International Sanitary Supply Association in 1966. In 2005, the association embraced cleaning service providers, prompting the association to change its name and tagline simply to ISSA - The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association.

ISSA is headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, USA, with regional offices in Amsterdam, Netherlands; Leicester, United Kingdom; Monterrey, Mexico; and Shanghai, China. ISSA regularly works with more than 85 associations, alliances, advocacy groups, and government agencies around the world to promote the value of commercial and institutional cleaning.

ISSA hosts a number of education and networking opportunities throughout the world, as well as the industry's largest cleaning trade show and convention, ISSA Show North America. In addition to tradeshows, ISSA hosts events, seminars, workshops and webinars to help its members stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends, regulations and demoing commercial cleaning business tools and products.

ISSA also helps increase industry professionalism and member success by offering business tools, educational products, industry standards, publications, and legislative and regulatory services that specifically focus on the professional cleaning industry.

Industry program initiatives

ISSA has spearheaded numerous professional cleaning industry initiatives that seek to change the landscape on female representation and entrepreneurial opportunities, the importance and financial value of cleaning and recognizing innovation in the industry.

ISSA Hygieia Network

Established as the first women's network for the global cleaning community, the ISSA Hygieia Network has developed female professionals at all levels and experience. The ISSA offers tools and mentorship to help those professionals navigate the professional cleaning industry.

The Value of Clean

A program established in 2015 to promote cleaning as a necessary investment in better health, a better environment, and a better bottom line. The Value of Clean program won the 2015 “Power of A” Silver Award from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). [3] The program provides members with real-world information, research, animated videos, infographics and other tools to illustrate the value of clean and what it means for companies internationally.

Innovation Award Program

The Innovation Award Program was established to foster growth and innovation in the professional cleaning industry, to provide a history of innovation in the industry to illustrate how it drives progress, and how it impacts businesses and the organization's membership. ISSA established an Innovation Award Hall of Fame to commemorate the noteworthy achievements of professional cleaning companies each year.

Certifications and standards

Industry certification affirms that the qualified businesses and personnel are up-to-date on industry trends, industry and safety regulations, and are approved by their industry to run their business and are able to perform satisfactorily in the areas in which they specialize. The ISSA offers its own set of certifications, training centers and set of standards to achieve and abide by.

Cleaning Management Institute (CMI)

ISSA's CMI is one of the most recognized education and certification providers in the professional cleaning industry. Founded in 1964, CMI's third-party training has certified more than 250,000 individuals worldwide and furthered the education and development of cleaning and maintenance professionals.

Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS)

The first consensus-based management standard that outlines the primary characteristics of a successful, quality cleaning organization. There are two types of CIMS certifications: CIMS and CIMS GB Certified. CIMS GB Certified is a specialized certification for green cleaning based on LEED: EB O&M green-cleaning criteria. The CIMS and CIMS-GB certifications demonstrate an organization is prepared to deliver quality, customer-focused services and ensures an organization is capable of delivering a comprehensive green cleaning program.

The ISSA clean standards

A framework of standards, set by the ISSA, to allow schools and other institutional facilities to objectively assess their cleaning processes in conjunction with using ATP meters in conjunction with a more traditional audit process. The ISSA Clean Standards focus on the following:

  • The desired levels of cleanliness that can reasonably be achieved
  • Recommended monitoring and inspection procedures to measure the effectiveness of cleaning
  • How to use the measurement and inspection results to assess and improve cleaning processes and products, ultimately resulting in a clean, healthy, and safe indoor environment.

Regulatory resources

As a trade organization, ISSA offers regulatory and legislative updates to ensure businesses in the professional cleaning industry are compliant and have the most current information.

Green cleaning

One of the hottest trends in the professional cleaning industry[4], green cleaning is a consumer-driven market phenomenon that makes green cleaning products and services in high demand[5]. In addition to the CIMS GB certification, ISSA offers information on the latest products and programs. They also deliver presentations on the subject.
