Historical background

In 1955, Civil Engineering school was opened by a society named "Institute of Engineering & Rural Technology (IERT)" . Shanker Saran, retired judge Honorable High Court of Allahabad and Late Vishwamitra, an advocate, were respectively the president and secretary of the society. This school was self-sustaining in its activities. A good number of students were admitted every year. The students were awarded two years' Diploma in Civil Engineering Course by the Board of Engineering College.

In 1962, U.P. Government took over this Institute by constituting a registered society named "Allahabad Engineering Polytechnic, Allahabad."

The society constituted a Board of Management/Managing Committee consisting of 11 members to manage affairs of the polytechnic. The state government awarded the status of Grant in Aid to the Institute. The rules and by-laws of the society were accordingly framed and the Director of Technical Education, U.P. became ex-officio Secretary of Management Committee.

Reviewing the multifarious activities and the achievements of the Institute in the country and abroad, the U.P. Government changed the name of Allahabad Polytechnic to "Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology" (I.E.R.T.) in 1982 and designated the post of "director" in place of principal. The institute was simultaneously awarded Academic Autonomy. An Autonomy Committee was constituted and Secretary Technical Education, U.P. became ex officio Chairman of the committee.

The Engineering Degree Division was set in 2001 and the college started offering degree courses in engineering with affiliation from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The college is very best in the country in diploma engineering programs. The institute maintains the same position. But the same can not be said for degree courses. They have been plagued with sub-standard faculty, poor placements and a lackluster staff. Students usually take admission to self-prepare for government competitive examinations like GATE, ESE, CAT, SSC, PO etc.

Admissions

Admissions for engineering courses are done through the state-level Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Exam conducted yearly in April. Admission for diploma, management, post diploma and others are done through entrance exam conducted by college.

Placements

Placements are good only for diploma students. Diploma holders can be found working in almost all major industries in India. However for degree students it is not so good. The placement cell is not that active. In recent years the only company visiting is Tata Consultancy Services. This has led to a general trend in students to prepare for government competitive examinations during their college years itself. The student community in IERT boasts of a very huge number of students who annually crack national level exams such as GATE, ISRO, ESE, SSC-JE, CAT etc.

Corruption Controversy (2012)

The college administration came under scanner in 2012 when director of IERT was accused and convicted in an internal scam wherein he purposefully hid the fact from the students that in their revised fee structure, the fees had been reduced. There were widespread protests and later on the funds were reimbursed to students. Since then all major fund-related decisions are taken under the advisory of Commissioner, Allahabad.
