The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK[1]) is an autonomous research institute dedicated for Development Studies and related subfields in Kolkata, India. It was established in 2002. Professor Amiya Kumar Bagchi, who was appointed as its first-Director, is now Professor Emeritus of the Institute. It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It is devoted to advanced academic research and informed policy advice in the areas of literacy, education, health, women, employment, technology, communication human sciences and economic development.

Affiliation and courses

This is an ICSSR research institute which conducts M. Phil. and Ph. D. courses in Development Studies[2] and short training programmes for research scholars[3]. The specialisations in M. Phil. are Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Regional Development[4].

The institute is located at the centre of Salt Lake City, West Bengal, India.

Library

The Institute's library started functioning in December 2002. It is now one of the leading libraries in India devoted to the economic and social sciences. It has rich collection of books, journals, research documents, reports, statistical databases of wide ranging areas in Anthropology, Economics, Ecology, Development Studies, Demography, Public Health, Political Science, History, Gender Studies, Human Sciences, Sociology, and Nutrition with special focus on North East India[5].
