The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) is an online nutrition school headquartered in New York City that offers a health coach training program. The school provides holistic nutrition education in addition to business training to prepare students to start their own health coaching practices. Graduates of IIN’s health coach training program can also use their certificates to earn credits toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree at certain partner schools.[1]

History

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, previously known as Gulliver’s, was founded in 1992 by Joshua Rosenthal, a health counselor and former owner of a natural food store.[2] IIN initially offered in-person classes in New York before transitioning to an online learning platform.[3] The school trains counselors in the practice of integrative nutrition, a broad approach to health that doesn’t subscribe to one particular dietary theory.[2]

Before founding IIN, Rosenthal studied nutrition concepts under Michio Kushi, focusing on macrobiotics and the One Peaceful Network World approach, which discusses the use of macrobiotic nutrition to create healthy individuals and communities. Studies in this approach and other alternative theories of nutrition helped inspire IIN’s current mission to create a “ripple effect of health and happiness that transforms the world.”[4] IIN is now the world’s largest nutrition school and has more than 100,000 graduates worldwide.[5][6]

In January 2015, Congress recognized January 12-18 as National Health and Wellness Coach Week.[7] A letter to IIN from Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio recognized the role of health coaches in helping prevent lifestyle-related disease and reversing the health crisis in the United States.[8][9]

Curriculum

IIN’s curriculum includes courses in nutrition, health and wellness concepts, and coaching and business skills.[5] It centers around the concepts of bioindividuality and Primary Foods,[4] which explain that health is based on more than just nutrition and includes other factors like healthy relationships, physical activity, spiritual practice and a fulfilling career.[10] According to IIN, graduates of the health coaching training program become eligible to take additional courses in business and publishing.[11][12]

IIN has hosted several professionals in health and nutrition as guest teachers. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Oz, Arianna Huffington, Dr. Andrew Weil, Mark Hyman, and Geneen Roth have all been speakers at IIN.[4][13]

Accreditation and educational partnerships

IIN is recognized by the Department of Education. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is a member of the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS) and has been a licensed vocational school by the New York State Education Department since 2009.[5][14]

IIN graduates can earn continuing education units (CEUs) through partner schools that have approved them.[1] IIN's partner universities include Purchase College,[15] Maryland University of Integrative Health,[16] Goddard College,[17] California Institute of Integral Studies,[18] Excelsior College[19] and Saybrook University.[20] IIN graduates with bachelor’s degrees can also enroll in the International Health Coach University’s master’s program.[21]
