Insomnia Cookies is a chain of bakeries in the United States that specializes in delivering warm cookies.[1][2] Based in New York and Philadelphia, it was started in 2003 by Seth Berkowitz, a student at the University of Pennsylvania. There are over 100 locations as of 2017. Most are located by university campuses and cater to students who want to order cookies late at night.

History and operations

The concept was founded by Seth Berkowitz in 2003 while attending the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.[1] Berkowitz began baking and delivering cookies from a dorm room to students on campus late at night.[1] From there the concept of cookie delivery grew.[3] The first retail store opened in 2004 in Syracuse, NY.[4]

Insomnia Cookies is based in New York City.[1] Insomnia Cookies bakeries are typically located near college and university campuses to target students who wish to order cookies past the closing time of traditional bakeries.[2] Stores have opened in Maryland, Philadelphia,[1] Miami,[5] New York City,[6] Boston, Baltimore, Champaign, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Morgantown, and Pittsburgh.[7]

Products

Insomnia Cookies offers 12 varieties of cookies. Some flavors include Chocolate Chunk, White Chocolate Macadamia, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, and S’mores Deluxe. All cookies are served warm from the oven. Cookie cakes and brownies are available with toppings such as Cookie Dough, M&Ms, and Snickers. Ice cream is offered at most locations by the cup, pint and quart. Milk is also available with every order.

Community involvement

Insomnia Cookies donates cookies and gift cards to organizations interested in raising money. Most notably in 2013, Insomnia Cookies participated in the World's Largest Bake Sale.[8] The company sponsors Relay for Life and dance marathon events[9] at universities, as well as the AIDS Walks of Boston, New York and New Haven.[10]
