Indira Canteens are a chain of fast-food joints in Bengaluru, India, started, subsidized and run by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The first Indira Canteen at Jayanagar was launched by Rahul Gandhi on 15 August 2017, on the independence day of the nation.[1] Each such canteen are planned to serve 500 people per meal per day.

Structure

The canteens will be constructed in all 197 civic wards in Bengaluru. The fast-food joints will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinners to the local people at a highly subsidized price.[2][3] Idlis and coconut chutney along with variety rice of the day will be served in breakfast, for lunch and dinner, rice, sambar, curd rice, tomato bath and a few other items will be served.[1] Food will be served only within fixed timings, Breakfast will be served only from 07:30 AM to 09:30AM, Lunch will be served only from 12:30PM to 03:00 PM and Dinner from 07:30PM to 09:00PM.

27 centralized kitchens are planned in each assembly constituency of Bengaluru. Only 9 of such centralized are functioning and all of such canteens are expected to be operational by October 2017.

All such canteens have a fixed menu. Due to operational inefficiencies some of the canteens may not operate as per the schedule or offer only one two items of menu.
