Indian Institute of Information Technology Vadodara (IIIT Vadodara) is one of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology established by the Government of India by the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017 [1] as an Institute of National Importance under public–private partnership (PPP) mode. The partners in this project are Government of India, Government of Gujarat, Tata Consultancy Services, Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute (GERMI) and Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals.[2] The institute was established in the year 2013. The institute has been allotted 50 acres of land in Knowledge City at Dumad, Vadodara by the Government of Gujarat. The institute's activities will be moved to Vadodara after the campus development. Till such time the institute will keep functioning from the temporary location in Gandhinagar.[3]

History

In the year 2011, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development. had announced the scheme to set-up twenty new Indian Institutes of Technology (IIITs) under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The scheme envisages establishment of autonomous, not for profit, self-sustaining, research-led educational institutes which will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness in the key sectors of Indian economy and industry. These institutes are expected to focus on applied research and education in applied IT in selected domain areas.

IIIT Vadodara was set-up in the year 2013 under this scheme in partnership between the Government of India (50% Contribution), the Government of Gujarat (35% Partnership), Tata Consultancy Services (5% Partnership), Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (5% Partnership) and Gujarat Energy Research and Management (5% Partnership). The institute was registered as a society and charitable trust with the Registrar of societies at Vadodara on January 3, 2014 under Societies Registration Act 1860 and Bombay Public trust Act, 1950. IIIT Vadodara was declared as Institute of National Importance by an act of parliament vide Gazette of India date 9th August 2017.
