Nicholas D. Miller, known professionally as Illenium (often stylized as ILLENIUM), is an American musician, DJ and producer.

Background

Nicholas Miller was born in Chicago, Illinois,[1] but his family moved to San Francisco when he was little. He then began making electronic dance music in early 2008 and in the summer of 2011, after seeing Bassnectar perform a show at Red Rocks, Miller became passionate about working on his first release, noting that, "when I saw him, I got Ableton the next day."[2]

Career

2013: Self-titled EP

In 2013, Illenium made his official debut with the release of his self-titled EP. The EP was released through the Los Angeles-based Prep School Recordings record label.[3]

2016: Ashes

In 2016, Illenium launched record label Kasaya Recordings in tandem with Seeking Blue.[4] On February 15, 2016, Illenium released his debut studio album, Ashes[5] as a free download via Kasaya Recordings and Mr. Suicide Sheep's label, Seeking Blue. The album peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart,[6] and at number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart.[7] The album was made available on vinyl on March 25.[8] Illenium later embarked on The Ashes Tour, which concluded on December 28.[9] A remix album was released for Ashes on 16 December 2016.[10]

2017: Awake

In September 2017, Illenium released his second studio album Awake via Kasaya Recordings & Seeking Blue.[11]

Illenium won Remix of the Year at the 2017 Electronic Music Awards for his "Say It" Flume remix. He also performed at the Electronic Music Awards show that year.

2018

On February 13, 2018, a collaboration between Kill the Noise, Illenium and Mako, titled "Don't Give Up on Me", was released as single via Proximity. The song was initially leaked in the Reddit community by fans who revealed the link to the then-unreleased version of the song that was published on Mako's YouTube channel.[12]

On July 17, 2018, Illenium released his collaboration with Excision titled "Gold (Stupid Love)".[13]

On July 21, 2018, Illenium debuted his new single 'Take You Down" at the Global Dance Festival.[14] The single was released on Friday, 3rd August, 2018.[15]

Personal life

In 2013, Illenium moved to Denver, Colorado, where he currently resides.[16] During an interview, Illenium stated that when he's not producing music, he spends a lot of time outdoors with his friends; where the DJ noted: "I feel like that keeps me centered." He also stated that one of his favorite activities is going out to the movies.[17]

Illenium cites ODESZA and Porter Robinson as some of his musical influences, while also considering Robinson a "dream collab."[18]

In July 2018, before the release of his single "Take You Down" he posted on his social media about his drug addiction in the past and the struggles he and his family had to face. He claimed that the single was inspired by his journey through drug addiction.[19][20]
