Ignacio Echeverría Miralles de Imperial (25 May 1978 – 3 June 2017) GM, the Skateboard Hero, was a Spanish lawyer and banker known for fighting off one of the terrorists in the 2017 London Bridge attack, being killed by other terrorists.

Biography

Ignacio Echeverria, called Abo, was the third of five children. He was the son of a Joaquín Echeverria Alonso,[1] an Asturian engineer, and Ana Miralles de Imperial Hornedo,[2] a lawyer. Even though he born in the Hospital General of Ferrol, La Coruña (Spain),[3] he was entered in the Civil Register of As Pontes de García Rodríguez, a town situated in the northwest of the province. He lived there until the age of 9 and all its documents listed as born in As Pontes de García Rodríguez, where his father worked in a lignite mine of Endesa. Later the family moved to Las Rozas de Madrid. Ignacio grew up in a Catholic home, being Ignacio and his siblings great-nephews of Antonio Hornedo SJ, Bishop and missionary in Peru. He was also a member of a local group of Catholic Action of Las Rozas. He was fluent in English, French and German; graduated in law from two universities, the Complutense University and the Sorbonne.[4][5] Ignacio Echeverria, an altruistic and religious person, humble, sociable and active, was also very fond of skateboarding. He also practiced surfing, golf and squash. His ability to complete a triple backflip earned him the nickname “the spin doctor” amongst his peers.

After working in several banks and being unemployed, he decided to move to London, achieving a position of prevention of money laundering analyst in the HSBC.[6][3]

Attack and burial

Around eleven o'clock the night of Saturday 3 June 2017,[5] Ignacio, carrying his skateboard on his back, was on his way bicycling with some friends to the district of Whitechapel. Near Borough Market, they saw a man delivering what seemed to them initially as punches (which then would be identified as stabs) to a police officer lying on the ground. Seeing that the man left the body of the officer and began to assault a woman (a French citizen that survived the incident and thanked due to Ignacio’s actions) Ignacio grabbed his skateboard and began to beat a surprised attacker, managing to divert him from his goal long enough so that several people were moved to safety. After that Ignacio saw another man attacking a policeman, he run towars the terrorist to help the officer and hit the terrorist with his skateboard, later the other two jihadists stabbed him in the back twice, that being the final cause of his death.[7][8]

After the attack his body disappeared and several of their relatives wrote messages on social networks asking for help to locate it.[9] His sister received a call from Ignacio’s friends to explain that he had confronted the terrorist and that he was hit by one of them. His sister and niece went to all London hospitals looking after him. They did not received any information, 72 hours without a response from the British Police Forces. However, the Spanish Consul, who was alerted by Ignacio’s friends contacted Ignacio’s sister, Isabel who lives in London, to offer his help. The Spanish Consulate and the Spanish Embassy provided help and support to his sister and to his family during all the process to find him. while the family moved to London.[10] The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Alfonso Dastis, expressed his "bewilderment" at the disappearance of Echeverria.[11] The father of Ignacio Echevarría reported that HSBC, the bank where his son worked, employed a investigator, former policeman, to help find him.[12]

On Wednesday 7th June, British authorities confirmed to the family that among the eight victims of the attack was Ignacio.[13] The family recognized him the next day and proceeded to their repatriation.[14] On 10th of June the body of Ignacio was transferred to Spain in a military airplane and was received with honors by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and María Dolores de Cospedal, Minister of Defense, at Torrejón Air Base (Madrid). The remains lie in repose in the cemetery of Las Rozas de Madrid, placing on his coffin the insignia of the Order of Civil Merit which was awarded posthumously, in its category of Grand Cross.[15][16] On Sunday 11 June, a funeral Mass ceremony was held in Corpus Christi Parish of Las Rozas with Archbishop of Madrid Carlos Osoro Sierra, that he previously officiated a mass to the arrival of the coffin to Spain and also attended his burial.[17][18]

Reactions

The Town Council of Las Rozas de Madrid, where lived the Echeverria family, declared two-day official mourning period and a concentration "in memory" of Ignacio which was attended by more than 1,000 people, and promise that could be his name to the skatepark where Ignacio used to practice.[7] The Town Council of As Pontes de García Rodríguez convened a demonstration of mourning.[8] The news of his death and the circumstances in which jumped to the national and international press and media gave him the nickname of the Skateboard Hero.[19] The Bar Association of Madrid expressed dismay for the murder of a former member and announcing its intention to participate in all tributes in his memory.[20] Spanish singer Joaquín Sabina dedicated to him a song in a concert that was held a few days after the attack in Ubeda (province of Jaén) and he mentioned him in his concert in London.[21] The Spanish Royal Federation of Skating was awarded him with its order of merit and medal.[22] Authorities of the Catholic Church in Spain also praised his example and asked to pray for him as the Cardinal-Archbishop of Madrid, held his funeral,[18] or the Bishop of Ferrol, his hometown, Luis Angel of the Heras CMF.[23] On 14th June, the Workers' Commissions Trade Union representatives in Endesa issued a statement lamented the murder of Ignacio Echeverría and expressing their solidarity with his father, a retired worker of the company.[1] The City Council of Alicante agreed to give his name to the San Juan Beach Skatepark. Clemente Miralles de Imperial and Marta Barrie, great-grandparents of Ignacio Echeverria, came from Alicante.[24] Marta Barrie was daughter of the British Consul in that city.[25] Spanish boxer Kerman Lejarraga dedicated his victory in New York to Ignacio Echeverria. He said «this victory especially dedicated to Ignacio Echeverria, who died being a hero».[26]

On the occasion of the Spanish state visit to the United Kingdom in July 2017, Felipe VI mentioned his act of heroism at the reception in the Spanish Embassy[27] and in his speeches to both houses of the Parliament and at the state banquet in the presence of the Queen.[28] A tribute was held in Comillas (Cantabria), a township where Ignacio Echeverria spent the summer with his family, on 10th August 2017. Dozens of people atended and a sports area with a skatepark was dedicated to him. [29] During the militare parade of the national day of Spain on 12th October 2017, that was devoted for the first time to victims of terrorism, Ignacio Echeverria received a tribute along with the victims of the Barcelona attacks, his mother accompanied King Felipe during the floral offering with the ambassadors of the countries that had suffered casualties in these attacks and presidents of the Association of Victims of Terrorism and the Foundation of Victims of Terrorism.[30]

On 11th October 2018, the parents of Ignacio alongside Constable Charles Guenigault and Constable Wayne Marques, other heroes of London Bridge attack, received the George Medal from the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Constable Leon McLeod was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal at the same Investiture ceremony.[31] [32] These four appointments were approved on 19th July 2018 for "confronting armed terrorists to protect others at London Bridge".[33]
