The Ideal Conceal is a pocket pistol that is designed to look like a smartphone and be used for concealed carry purposes. It is made by the Ideal Conceal company based in Minnesota, United States.[2] The Ideal Conceal has drawn attention and criticism because the National Rifle Association is featuring it at their annual meeting held in May in Dallas, Texas.[2][3][4]

Description

The Ideal Conceal is a derringer-style handgun containing two 0.380-caliber barrels. It is black, with a plastic exterior and metal core.[5] It is around the same size as a Samsung Galaxy S7 and has a handle that collapses to give it the appearance of mobile phone when not in use.[5] When folded up, it locks and so cannot be fired. When the safety button is pushed, it flips open and becomes ready to shoot.[1]

Criticism

The National Rifle Association describes in at their website saying "The Cellphone Pistol offers a great option for self-defense along with max concealment" and "The shape will not print as a pistol, yet can be drawn and fired quickly."[6] Survivor of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and activist Jaclyn Corin criticized this new gun saying that it will cause the police to target more people.[6] There have also been concerns about children mistaking the Ideal Conceal for a real phone.[5]

In 2016, Senator Chuck Schumer called the gun a "...disaster waiting to happen." and said that it could be potentially illegal in the United States under the current gun laws, and would talk to the Justice Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.[7] In 2017, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined that the Ideal Conceal design is a legal pistol. [8]
