Ice Cold Gold was a reality television series that airs on Animal Planet. The series followed a mining company called Sixty Degree Resources along with its eight members as they tried to strike it rich in one of the harshest, most inhospitable places in the world. With the arctic summer lasting only two months, the cast fearlessly prospected and mined throughout Greenland hoping to unearth her hidden fortunes before the arctic winter came back, covering everything with ice. During this small window of time, no risk outweighed the payoff as the prospectors endured severe arctic storms, ice-infested boat rides, fatal rock slides, volatile ice sheets, utter isolation, and discord amongst themselves.
Series
This series was developed by Animal Planet's Kurt Tondorf and based on an original concept by David Casey. Casey came up with the concept for the show after first visiting Greenland five years ago while a producer on Current TV's Vanguard series. He fell in love with the country -- "it became an addiction of mine"—and wanted to find a way to get back there. One of the stories he covered for Current was related to the international mining industry, and he thought that would be a topic worth exploring. He took the idea to Animal Planet and "they took a big risk and went right in. Casey adds that it wasn't hard to get Greenland authorities to approve the shoot, as the production was "welcomed with open arms."
The Hollywood Reporter wrote that, "Ice Cold Gold ... marks the first TV production of this caliber to be shot in Greenland." [2][3] During filming, Casey emphasized to the crew the importance of showing the dangers of what the miners were doing as well as making sure "every single frame spoke to Greenland." He said it was important to show viewers at home "how rare an experience this was" but adds that extra precautions were taken to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. Still, he notes that everyone involved was aware of the risks—and the potential rewards.
Now, Ice Cold Gold Season 3 raises the bar yet again. There was not a single location accessible by road. The cast and crew had to hike hundreds of miles on foot and cross glaciers with heart-stopping crevasses. They conquered rock faces and quickly melting ice caves that no man had ever rappelled into. This fearless production lived for weeks on end at several locations only reachable by helicopter. No matter where they explored this season, the fatal beauty of Greenland was always present; unmoved by the prospectors ambitions, and uncaring to whether the men lived, or died.

Eric Drummond is the lead geologist and team leader on 'Ice Cold Gold'. He is a licensed hydro-geologist and an engineering geologist. A lot of his work deals with the clean-up of contaminated ground water and looking into geological conditions like earthquakes and soil stability. Eric also engages in mining claim evaluations for work. Being from California, he finds it a good place to be a geologist because of what comes from earthquakes, the history of mining and its potential to hold so many rich deposits. Eric has always been infatuated with rocks and remembers always bringing them home as a kid. Eric recalls, "During my freshman year of high school, I had a great teacher who taught geology and it was there that I pretty much knew I wanted to be a geologist."
When it comes to Greenland, Eric says geology "is real important". That being said, it is Eric's role to put his team in a spot to succeed. He is constantly on the hunt to find new areas of rich deposits - diamonds, gold, silver, gems, whatever they might be. When asked what it took to succeed in Greenland, Eric stated - "It is a complex process - a lot of researching, sampling, mapping, analysis and a lot of interpretation. And it also requires a little bit of luck." [4] |

Americo DiSantis III is the lead Driller on 'Ice Cold Gold'. He grew up in the construction field and has been a licensed driller for almost 10 years. His company is hired to drill core samples of soil and water so geologists can test the potential site for contaminants. AmeriDrill also takes part in geotechnical drillings to see how hard and how far down the soil runs. This is crucial information as an architectures foundation is the most important aspect of any blueprint.
When asked about Greenland, Americo stated - "The type of drilling we do in Greenland is called rock coring". That is where one would drill down into the bedrock and pull out specific core samples to see what mineralization is happening beneath the surface. This type of drilling is key in Greenland since the areas that are prospected are mostly exposed bedrock.[5] |

Jesse Feldman's expertise is in hard rock mining and prospecting on 'Ice Cold Gold'. He loves to recall his childhood growing up in Apache Junction, Arizona around the legendary Mammoth Gold Mine. Embodying the culture of the wild west, Jesse and his younger brother Josh grew up in a "gold rush" microcosm where the people that made a living off the land were ranchers, cowmen and miners. Many of them worked for large scale mining companies and owned their own mines. When asked about his daily schedule, Jesse said "One day I might be on a horse, one day I might be in the mine. Every day is something new so life isn’t so boring – I don’t sit at a desk every day".
When asked about his thoughts on Greenland so far, Jesse stated, "Its one of those places that draws you back. Everything is alive in Greenland. The weather is always changing. Rocks are always falling off the mountains. There are huge icebergs and ice sheets. Everything is on the move. The people there are awesome themselves and it’s awesome to see a native culture that’s under self-rule. They want to draw mining to Greenland because that will help the get their country stabilized so they can have an economy that supports itself. They’re on a positive track." [6] |

Josh Feldman's expertise is in hard rock mining and prospecting on 'Ice Cold Gold'. He grew up in Apache Junction, Arizona mining alongside his older brother Jesse and his father, Ron Feldman. Josh recalls countless days prospecting in and around the gold mines that his family owned. He continues to build on their success and progress there today. When he was 1st approached about prospecting in Greenland, Josh was ready - "What better way to test my skills. It seemed like the ultimate adventure and what better place could there be to find gold?"
To this day, Josh will speak on the allure of Greenland and the fact that they are exploring areas that are untouched by man. He went on to explain, "Our mines in Arizona have been around for over 100 years, we didn't get to find them first hand. That opportunity of discovery is gone for me in Arizona, but I have that chance in Greenland. It wasn't the desert, but I still had to use the same instincts: follow my nose and set off to discover some unknown properties. That's the dream, that's what made me want to go to Greenland." [7] |

Gator is the lead excavation and demo expert on 'Ice Cold Gold'. He was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona and is neighbors with the Feldman's. To this day, he continues to own and run a successful contracting business. His days vary dramatically, he goes on to explain that "Some days I'm doing paperwork, others I'm meeting with clients or bidding for contracts". Even as the owner, he enjoys being out in the field and being able to run the machinery. He continues to set the bar with his work in the field and loves interacting with his customers face-to-face.
When asked about why he finally decided to go to Greenland, Gator said "The Feldman's and I heard about the opportunity and discussed it briefly. Then it became a weekly discussion. Then a daily one. And pretty soon it was consuming my every thought. I would stay up late researching and basically I was hooked. I chose to go because I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was infected with the thought of exploring any place that has not yet been explored".[8] |

John Self is the lead Placer Miner & Gem Recovery Expert on "Ice Cold Gold". As a 4th generation Colorado native, his desire to strike riches in Greenland is fueled by his deep-seated love for prospecting and his goal of securing a financial foundation for his daughter. He is also a veteran mountaineer and takes pride in being able to solo his way through any rough terrain. He skillfully does so by forging new, more efficient routes through some of the most diverse landscapes. As a hobby, John loves to build cabinets and all sorts of furniture from scratch.[9] |

For the last 20 years, Doug Stoup has refined his skills through unbelievably dangerous experiences to become the worlds leading polar pioneer, ski adventurer, expedition guide, and stand up paddler. Spending the majority of his time outside with Mother Nature has made him a strong environmentalist as well. His renowned expeditions aren’t always a one-man show. Every year he takes a group of people on epic voyages through Africa, the Amazon, Antarctica, Greenland, the North Pole, and Norway. He has faced some of the harshest conditions this earth can throw his way. To top it all off - Doug has had to fight for his life in an active Polar Bear den, he has scaled the most intimidating landscapes and has trekked a total of 738 miles across Antarctica alone. He is the 1st American male to ski the South Pole and the 1st person to ski/snowboard the descent of Vinson Massif.
When he was approached to be on Ice Cold Gold, he couldn’t help but embrace the opportunity. He wanted to bring his expertise and survivalist mentality to SDRs arsenal. As he got to know the members better, he realized what an amazing group of explorers they are. He found himself chasing the same goal as SDR - to create a real gold prospecting show that truly shows how hard it is to operate a small-scale mining company in one of the most remote and toughest places on earth. Doug goes on to explain - "Greenland has many personalities and she certainly showed each one of them this last summer. Her 24 hour sun light, her merciless rain, her ruthless snow, her freezing winds, and of course, her tenacious cold. We had to be in full survival mode the entire time." |

Chad Watkins was the lead Dredger on 'Ice Cold Gold' until he was asked to leave at the beginning of season three by a majority of castmates, due to the dredge they brought with them proving fruitless in the Red Zone. He is also a 4th generation Colorado native and when asked about other natives like himself and John, Chad said "There's not too many of us left. We're a rare breed". He grew up about 10 miles from where he lives now and recalls crawling down his first mine shaft when he was about 10 years old. Now, Chad has been prospecting for over 25 years and he operates a small guide business where he teaches people how to pan and dredge for minerals. Chad claims to have spent more time dredging at high altitudes than anyone else in the country - his highest is about 11,000 feet. When asked about such feats, Chad said "Its hard because it's 35 degree water but the lure of striking it rich is the same no matter what the price of gold is" [10] |

Jack Duggins was the lead Wilderness and Survivalist guide on 'Ice Cold Gold'. He used his expertise and experience to help keep his fellow prospectors out of deaths way by assessing the probable dangers at every prospecting site. A skilled marksmen, Jack kept the other 7 members safe from Greenland's wildlife. He also kept them fed with his keen hunting abilities. He began prospecting back in 1979 while he was in the US Coast Guard. He distinctly remembers a three-day whitewater rafting trip in California that exposed him to "Gold Fever" for the first time. He was hooked for life. Today, the search for gold has taken Jack all over the United States, Canada and Greenland.[11] |

John desperately wants to see the rubies on his 50th birthday, so he makes a foolhardy hike to the Red Zone with more than 50 pounds of reindeer meat on his back. It's a dangerous trek never before done by any human, and with the wrong intentions, he puts the team at severe risk with his choice to redeem himself. Meanwhile, Eric gets a bad case of ruby fever and successfully ventures farther and deeper into the Red Zone. The miners find a deposit a hundred times better than their first and confirm they could be sitting at the epicenter of the largest ruby band in the world. They find one particular ruby worth $200,000, but with ruby fever in full swing, the team members begin to mistrust themselves and each other. Eric tries to take control but ends up breaking the ruby that could have paid for the whole season. The group’s low morale is saved when John arrives with reindeer meat, but time and weather are forcing them to leave the Red Zone in two days. In the mad rush to take care of business, the team begins to unravel again, and adding John into the mix only stirs the pot worse. | |||

Riding high, the miners return to Ilulissat and make a new addition to the team, a Greenlandic camp guard dog named Nuunu. But their prospecting fortunes soon change. Before reaching their next camp, disaster strikes when the men’s mining equipment falls 2000 feet from a transport chopper. The loss of the equipment sends the team reeling, but team leader and geologist Eric insists the miners press on to their next target, a desolate rock in the middle of the ice sheet, they’ve named Cloud Island. Now, without their equipment, and faced with survival in what may be the team’s most dangerous location ever, the other miners begin seriously doubting Eric’s leadership. | |||

The group also begins to question Eric’s judgment after discovering that there are no signs of gold anywhere at their new base camp and Gator shreds his ankle while walking over the jagged terrain. Despite Eric’s frustration with the Feldman’s plan, he brings the team together for one final gold hunt in Eqi. As conflict ensues, the team’s guard dog, Nuunu, gives birth to puppies. As the dogs, and the miners prepare to depart from Eqi, the gloves come off for a fight between Eric and the Feldman’s that may split the team forever. | |||

While Eric’s team, sticking with the original plan, finds a large gold deposit and a supply of crude oil, Josh’s team runs into iceberg-sized trouble.
