"I Pretend" is a song written by Barry Mason and Les Reed.[2] Des O'Connor's recording of this track became a number-one hit in the UK Singles Chart in July 1968,[3] and a number-one hit in Ireland the same month. His version was released in the United States on Diamond Records. However, it failed to chart.

The only version of the song to chart in the United States was by Mel Carter, whose cover hit #38 on the Easy Listening charts in the fall of 1968.[4]
