Student life

Classroom assignment

This school contains three SP (Special Placement) classes in each grade: 601 and 602, 610, 701 and 702, 710, and 801, 802, and 810 (SP Classes Information was changed in 2015). The students in the SP classes receive more challenging school work than in regular classes.

All 8th grade SP classes are offered the opportunity to take the US History and Government (instead of CCLS Social Studies), Living Environment (instead of CCLS Science), Algebra (instead of CCLS Math), and Korean (instead of Spanish).

State exams

Each year the students are given the statewide ELA (English Language Arts) and Mathematics exam. The eighth grade students also take the statewide science exam. Formerly, students have taken the MOSL (Measure of Student Learning) exam for social studies and science classes. 8th grade students do not take the Science MOSL due to the statewide science exam. Students in 8th grade SP classes are offered the opportunity to take the US History and Government Regents, Living Environment Regents, and Algebra Regents that is also included to there normal statewide ELA (English Language Arts) and Mathematics exam.

Talent and mandatory classes

The school offers talent courses that take place during the course of a school day. Students choose from Dance, Band, Keyboard, Chorus, and Art. Students choose a talent during their first year at the school and usually remain in that class until their year of graduation. Talent classes take place three times each week for one period each day. The school currently offers foreign language classes for 8th grade students, including Spanish (for non-SP classes) and Korean (for SP classes).

Extra-curricular activities and after-school clubs

Sports teams

The soccer team is run by the guidance counselor Daniel Flaxman. They are the New York City Middle School Champions for 2016.

The football team is run by Physical Education teacher Steve Margaroli.

The track team is run by Mr. Berger, chorus teacher.

Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM)

In the 2015-2016 school year, the school started the placement of the schoolwide enrichment model for student of grade 6 and 7. Students can choose from Newspaper, Drama, Poetry, Business, and more. The school supports the Schoolwide Enrichment Model from September to February and March to June. February and June feature a showcase for parents displaying what the students have done.

The school added a debate team starting in the 2015–16 school year. The school has won numerous awards from weekly debate competitions with other New York City schools.

After-school program

This free high quality after-school program at IS25Q and World Journalism Preparatory School is only for grades 6-8 (students in World Journalism Preparatory School in grades 9-10 can join as youth employment). Students are given free snacks and homework help. They are then given activities aligned to the Common Core. Activities include Art/Drama Club, STEM Club, Chess Club, Guitar/Music Club, Builder's Club, Team Sports Club, Video Game Club, and Fitness Club. The program runs Monday through Friday, from 2:25 to 5:30pm.
