Hwangbo Hye-jeong (Korean: 황보혜정; born August 16, 1980), better known as Hwangbo, is a singer, rapper, model, activist, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. She is the first Asian singer whose song (the single R2song) achieved 1st place on a UK music chart.

She debuted as part of the icon female group Chakra, and quickly became the group's leader.

In 2007, three years after Chakra's last album, she released her first solo album "Lady In Black", which marked a change in her image that was previously neutral. In 2009, she became the first Asian singer to head the main European charts when she released the single "R2song". In her solo career she has released 1 album and 4 digital singles.

She is nicknamed in the entertainment scene as "the general" for her days in Xman.

Life and career

1999: Pre-debut and days from apprentice

Hwang Bo was discovered by producer and comedian Lee Sang-min, while working in a pasta restaurant. Before his debut he was apprenticed to Lee Sang Min himself while in 1999 he was part of the band "Bros".

2000-2006: Debut y salto la fama

Hwang Bo debuted the year 2000 as part of the female group Chakra. The group officially debuted on February 24 in music camp with their first single "One" and in March of that same year they released their first album "Come a Come", winning many rookie prizes. Although she debuted as vocalist and main rapper, later as an older member she became the leader. The first single from the second Chakra album released in 2001, became the first number one hit in South Korea. Chakra released its last album "Tomato" in 2003 and it was officially dissolved at the beginning of the year 2006, due to financial difficulties. Chakra managed to bring a new wave to Korean music and became one of the most pop Korean female icon groups, sharing credits with other popular girl groups like S.E.S, Fin.K.L and Baby V.O.X.

In particular, it was she who attracted the most attention of the group, due to her appearance similar to that of a Hindu woman who was complemented with the image and music of the group. It was also she who opposed the dissolution.

After the last album of Chakra, Hwangbo went through a period of depression, which led her to go through a reflection in her career. Hwangbo began to sign up constantly for volunteer work, leaving the country to help people from all over the world, more specifically in the Middle East and Africa. He also "adopted" a small Bangladeshi girl, constantly sending money to create a beneficial life for her daughter, but when an outbreak broke out Hwangbo was in Korea waiting for her daughter; Unfortunately he did not arrive in New Delhi. Since then she began directing the money she used to allocate to her daughter to the Revival Project, eventually becoming a recognized spokesperson. He is also an active participant in charity work, becoming close friends of actress Shin Ae-ra through his contributions in Bangladesh. She is 2007, part of the charity group "Compassion."

During that time Hwang Bo continued to appear frequently in various variety shows, including "X-Man" by SBS and "Love Letter". This is where he cultivated an unfeminine image, due to his strong gestures of frankness and simplicity. This led her to be nicknamed in the Korean entertainment scene with the nickname of the 'general'.

2007-2010: Solo career and increase in popularity

About three years after Chakra's fourth studio album, his solo debut album entitled "Lady in Black" was released in March 2007. The success "Sorry For The Tears", marked a change in its image since it was a ballad. The solo debut album consisted of thirteen songs that demonstrated his talent and skill in singing. The other single of this album was "Shall We Date".

In May 2008, Hwang Bo joined the MBC reality show "We Got Married," where he paired with SS501 leader Kim Hyun Joong. The couple gained great popularity through their marriage and were nicknamed as the couple lettuce, obtaining on December 28, 2008 a "MBC Entertainment Award" for the best couple. Due to programming conflicts, Kim Hyun Joong and Hwangbo made their official departure from the show on December 14. That same year due to her popularity, she became an increasingly influential fashionista icon and one of the most popular female singer of all that led her to increase her fame in Asia.

To capitalize on his great popularity, in mid-2008 he released the digital single "Gift for Him". Main theme titled "Get Hot" ("뜨거워 져") took her to stardom in Europe, becoming the first Korean to achieve it. The dance also became very popular among the Korean public that led to the popular fashion dance Tecktonik (known as the Tecktonik wave). The remix was presented by Koo Junyup as well as the dance of the song. He also released his other hit "Mature" as part of the release of two songs by Gift For Him.

On August 18, 2009, he released the Ep mini album titled "R2song" in South Korea, which included his previous hits. The title song "R2song", was first released on August 7, 2009 for the first time in the United Kingdom, ranking number one on the main European charts. This was the first time that an Asian singer, achieved the number 1 position in Europe, which was considered by the Asian media as a feat. Eventually, three other versions of R2song were released mixed by the producer "Postino". The main single was also successful in Korea, ranking # 1 on the "Mnet" account, # 11 on the "K-Chart" singles list, in addition to entering the top 20 and 10 on several popularity charts. It was also cataloged by the best DJs in Europe as the number one dance theme. In conclusion, after the great popularity of Hwang Bo in Europe and also in much of Asia, Hwang Bo was called a "sexy superstar".

During her rest in her activities as a singer, she hosted several television programs such as: "Nodaji", "Finding Delicious" and "Human Mentor". Also during 2008 and 2009, she was a member of the first season of "Infinity Girls", a totally female versión of "Infinite Challenge", broadcast by MBC Every 1. Also, in 2010, he was one of the 5 Mc of "Midnight Idols" along with Kim Hyung Jun of SS501, Kim Chang Ryul, Eun Ji-won and Kim Sung-soo.

In September 2010, I held a meeting of fans in Thailand, stopping in several cities and provoking attention in that country.

After more than a year of their previous mini-album, the digital single "I'm Still Beautiful" was released in late October 2010. The song topped several popularity charts in Canada. Also the mv of the song is a simple video, but in which it emphasizes its great quality. The foreground of HwangBo at the beginning of the MV takes an explosion of emotions and it is curious how even with the makeup it feels as if it were naked, even more than when it really has a clean face. Not to mention, the lyrics of the song are perfect for any woman who knows how to value herself and love herself. In particular, this digital single has marked its absence in the music industry for nearly eight years.

2011-2013: Active as an actress and in entertainment

In 2011, she focused mainly as an actress. In August he played a role in the SBS comedy "Oh My God", playing a charismatic wife, thus demonstrating his extraordinary charm and obtaining high levels of audience. In 2012, I also participated in the MBN drama "Can Love become Money", playing a leading role and getting a good evaluation.

Since then Hwang Bo only participated for the third season of "Infinity Girls", without any personal work. Program in which he would have participated during 2008 and 2009 and in which he returned at the end of 2010. During that time he entered an incubation period, being seen many times in Hong Kong, from the end of 2012 until the beginning of 2013, which generated Many speculations and discussions between the defenders.

By the end of 2013, after the end of the recording of Infinity Girls, HwangBo moved away from the entertainment industry was no longer seen prompting the debate.

Meanwhile, in her other interview with "SBS PowerFM", Hallyu's star spoke of his reaction every time foreigners approached her during a trip. In October of that was the presenter of the debut of the female group "Bulldok".

Hwang Bo still continues with her model work, participating in the "Seoul Fashion Week" as one of the models of the Korean designer Imseonoc.

Since 2017, she remains active on television as a recurring guest on several variety shows, including her appearance in 2018 for episode 108 of "Knowing Bros". She paired up with Nam Bo-ra in Secret Unnies in August, 2018.
