Hawara or Humeima[1][2] (Arabic: الحميمة) is a ruins in Southern Jordan dated to first half of the 8th century,[3] located 45 km to the south of Petra and 55 km to the north of Aqaba.[4]

History

Humeima was occupied from about 90BC until the early Islamic period,[5] and has Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic remains, including Roman bath, five Byzantine churches, an early Islamic palace.[6]

The settlement was founded by Aretas III as a stop on the trade route from Petra to Gulf of Aqaba.[7] During the Greco-Roman era, it was called "Auara" (Greek: Αὔαρα), derived from "Hawara" which means "white" in Aramaic.[8]

The town was the home of the Abbasid rulers around 700AD, in which it was the birth place of the first three Caliphs: As-Saffah, Al-Mansur and Al-Mahdi.

Abd-Allah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah and Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abdallah both lived in the town.

As rain fall is only 80 cm annuual, an extensive water storage and irrigation works lies in the ruins.[9][10]
