Humberto Insolera

Humberto Insolera (born 1975)[1] is an Italian academic, actor and advocate for the deaf.

Early life

Insolera was born from deaf family and has studied in various universities from Padua, Bristol, Geneva to Washington D.C. specialising in international politics. After his academic studies, he attended and delivered various seminars, conferences and workshops worldwide.

Career

Dr. Insolera has worked and collaborated for numerous organisations mostly related to protecting the rights of deaf people.

National politics

Dr. Insolera collaborated with the Ente Nazionale Sordi (ENS) as a consultant on foreign affairs from 2006 until 2012. Since 2007 he works as lecturer of deaf studies and is an accessibility observatory member of the ENS since 2011.[2]

He is heavily involved in the recognition of Italian Sign Language campaign and is one of the leaders of the movement considering his deep knowledge on issues related to accessibility in higher education for both deaf persons and persons with disabilities in Italy. During his early years, he has been an Italian Youth Committee Member and coordinated the first and second Italian Deaf Academic Conference for the deaf, deaf blind and hard of hearing delegates in 2011 and 2016.[3]

International politics

In 2009, he was appointed Board Member of the European Union of the Deaf (EUD), and since 2013 has been EUD vice-president. While working for the EUD, he has actively participated in numerous European Institutions, such as European Parliament Committee Sessions, European Commission Conference on the European Day of Persons with Disabilities and also in the Council of Europe. From 2013, not only he was appointed chair of the Accessibility Working Group but also worked as a Member of the Expert Group on Human Rights for the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) until 2015. He was also one of the participants in the UN CRPD Ad Hoc Committee meetings in New York, and collaborated in the implementation and monitoring processes of the UN CRPD both in Italy and at a European level via EUD.[4][5]

In May 2017 he has been elected by the EDF (European Disability Forum) as the EDF Executive committee.[6][7]

Acting

Humberto Insolera stars in his brother Emilio Insolera's film Sign Gene, the first superhero film about deaf mutants who have superhuman powers through the use of sign language. Insolera plays as Jux Clerc, the brother and main villain of the leading character Tom Clerc’s. The film was released in 2017.[1][8]
