The Humane Party is a United States national political party with a focus on animal rights and a sustainable economy.[1]

History

Founded in 2009, the party requires all candidates, officers, and board members to sign an oath abstaining from the use of animal products and services.[2] The party's goals include abolishing the property status of animals, banning all GMOs, and replacing the electoral college with direct democracy.[3]

2016 Presidential Election

On November 1, 2015, Humane Party CEO Clifton Roberts, a vegan for 18 years, became the party's first presidential candidate.[2] On June 10, 2016, Dr. Amie "Breeze" Harper was announced as the party's vice-presidential nominee.[4] After entering the race Roberts said "I am a voice of the Humane Party, a party that offers you, me, our non-human animal friends, and citizens—that are naive or unaware of the issues it addresses and the solutions it offers—an inspired and refreshing platform … A platform to live by, and a platform that I would surely die for."[5] Roberts and Harper mainly campaigned through interviews with vegan websites.[6] On November 8, 2016 Roberts gave his concession speech on his YouTube channel.[7]

Political positions

The Humane Party mainly focuses on vegan and environmental issues.

Abolition Amendment and ERA2

The Humane Party has compared slavery to owning animals which caused them to create the Abolition Amendment and Equal Rights Amendment II. The Abolition Amendment states in Section 1. "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude of any animal shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction."[8] The Equal Rights Amendment II states "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex, sexual orientation, gender, or choice of spouse or partner."
