Horacio "Atio" Castillo III (May 26, 1995 – September 17, 2017) was a 22-year-old Filipino student leader who was killed in a hazing incident performed by the Aegis Juris Fraternity, a law school fraternity affiliated with the oldest law school in Southeast Asia, the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Civil Law.

The brutality of his death and the fact that the supposed perpetrators are affluent law students and lawyers affiliated with the prestigious Catholic University of Santo Tomas drew attention of the media to the case. Castillo was also a descendant of Philippine national hero and University of Santo Tomas alumnus Jose Rizal.[1] Castillo was also a descendant of the Philippine General Miguel Malvar.

Personal life

Castillo figured in a fire in Paco, Manila 2005 where their whole family was rescued. Castillo finished his secondary education at Colegio San Agustin - Makati, and attended the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters. He attained his bachelor degree in Political Science in 2017, and was admitted to UST Law right after graduation. During his undergraduate years, he was a member of the Students' Democratic Party and The Political Science Forum. He enjoyed popularity in the university as an active voice of the student body.[2][3][4]

Death

The Senate of the Philippines have conducted hearings. The case is currently under the care of the Department of Justice.[5]
