Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Manhattan

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located at 209 West 82nd Street near Amsterdam Avenue in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. The parish was established in 1898.[3]

Father Gary Mead, a resident priest at the Church of Holy Trinity[4], was charged in October 2007 with loitering and forcible touching (a misdemeanor offense) after he was arrested during a police sting operation.[5] According to News 12 Westchester, Father Gary Mead was one of several men arrested at the Bedford, New York rest stop[6]:

"The men range in age from 35 to 75, and police say many of them are married. However, they were allegedly caught soliciting gay sex at the rest stop along I-684. Authorities said the investigation came about when a man and his 10-year-old son saw men having sex behind the rest stop in the woods. The witness tipped off police."[7]

According to The Journal News, "Police said he [Father Gary Mead] fondled an undercover officer and was charged with forcible touching."[8]

A judge "nearly issued a bench warrant for the priest."[9] after Father Gary Mead failed to appear in court for an arraignment hearing in November 2007.[10] Days later, he appeared in court to plead "not guilty"[11] He also claimed that his arrest was "a mistake because he was only caught dumping trash at the site. "[12]

There are no public reports on the outcome of Father Gary Mead's court case.

Father Gary Mead is currently administrative director [13] of ITV, the "Instructional Television service for the schools of the Archdiocese of New York."[14]

Buildings

The church was built 1910-1912 to the designs of Joseph Hubert McGuire. It has a dome of Guastavino tile. According to Frederick D. Taylor in his article Medieval New York - Holy Trinity Church the church was built deliberately in the Byzantine style, unusual for the time, and has been "considered to be one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in this country."[1] The Rev. Frank W. Crowder, D.D., rector, had a four-story brick rectory at 341 East 87th Street built in 1927 to designs by G. Atterbury of 139 East 53rd Street for $50,000.[2]
