Hiroka Matsumoto (松本 紘佳, Matsumoto Hiroka, born 1995 in Japan)[1] is a Japanese violinist.

Brief history

Hiroka lived at Aoba-ku, Yokohama City from her age of three.[2] She began to learn the violin from the age of four,[3][4] and made her debut at Philia Hall three months later.[5] She was observed as "has a very huge potential and a great talent, and will grow to an unique musical personality in future." by Zakhar Bron at seven years old.[1][6] At the age of nine, she gave her first recital in Budapest, Hungary.[7][6] At the age of 13 in 2008, she played and conducted the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra for "The Four Seasons" of Vivaldi.[7][3]

At The National Art Center, Tokyo in 2009, she played the smaller violin, which was used by Mozart in childhood.[3][8] This had caught attention as the first concert using the small violin, made in 1746, outside Austria.[7][9]

In Japan, Hiroka studied under Koichiro Harada, a professor of Toho Gakuen School of Music, and Gérard Poulet.[7][3] She was given a scholarship[4] by the Toho Gakuen School of Music Soloist Diploma course.[7] Hiroka studied under professor Boris Kuschnir and others at Konservatorium Wien and University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.[7]

In 2009-2011 Hiroka got a scholarship of Yamaha Music Foundation.[7][3] In 2012-2013, she also got a music scholarship of The Meiji Yasuda Cultural Foundation.[7] She has been studying in Vienna for three years from the Fall 2014 as a trainee of up-and-coming artists overseas study program of the Agency for Cultural Affairs (Japan).[7][10]

  • 2007 - All Japan Students Music Competition, Elementary School Part, First Prize[7][3] (the highest score in all parts[6])
  • 2009 - Yehudi Menuhin Award (highest award) - Kronberg Academy (Germany)[7][3]
  • 2009 - IMA Music Awards - Ishikawa Music Academy[7][3]
  • 2010 - ABC Rookie Concert, First Prize (youngest)[7][6] - ABC Music for the Promotion of Science
