Hildegard Ochse (December 7, 1935 – June 28, 1997) was a German photographer.
Life and work
Ochse was born in 1935 in Bad Salzuflen, Germany, the daughter of Dr. phil. Emma Maria Römer-Krusemeyer [1] and Arthur Peter Maria Römer. In 1952 she traveled to the USA on a student exchange to Rochester, returning to Germany 1953 with a Senior High School Diploma form Nazareth Academy. After she finished her general qualification for university entrance 1955 in Bad Salzuflen, she studied Roman language and art history at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. In 1958 she married Dr. phil. Prof. Horst Ochse (1927-2014),[2] later giving birth to four children. In 1973 the family moved to West Berlin and lived in Berlin-Steglitz.
Beginning photography studies in 1975, she then pursued more advanced training at Michael Schmidt's "Werkstatt für Fotografie", and via workshops presented by Lewis Baltz, John Gossage, Larry Fink, and André Gelpke. By 1978, she was an educator herself, teaching photography at the Landesbildstelle and at Berlin's teacher training college.[3]
After embarking on her freelance photography career in Berlin in 1981, she exhibited her work in Berlin and Italy. A portion of the body of work she produced is housed in the collections of the Berlinische Galerie [4] in Berlin and at the Universitá di Parma, Centro studi, dip. Fotografia and private collections.
Diagnosed with leukemia in 1995, she underwent several rounds of chemotherapy, but succumbed to the disease in Berlin in July 1997 at the age of 61. She was survived by her husband, four children Adrian, Katharina, Caroline, Benjamin and five grandchildren.[5]
Publishing rights for most of Hildegard Ochse's photographs are now handled by her son Benjamin Ochse and the Prussian Heritage Image Archive.
