Helen Mountfield

Helen Mountfield, QC (born 14 March 1967) is a British barrister and legal scholar, specialising in administrative, human rights, and equality law. She has been Principal of Mansfield College, Oxford since 2018.

Mountfield was educated at Crown Woods, a comprehensive school in South East London, and obtained a first class degree in Modern History from Magdalen College Oxford in 1989. She was a Reid and Holker Scholar of Gray's Inn, and was called to the Bar in 1990. In 2000, she was one of the founding members of Matrix Chambers, from which she still practises. She has been a Recorder since 2010 and a Deputy High Court Judge since 2013. She is a Master of the Bench at Gray's Inn.

Mountfield has been counsel in many very significant constitutional, human rights and equality cases [www.matrixlaw.co.uk]. In December 2016, she represented the 'People's Challenge' group in the case of Miller v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union in the Supreme Court, where it was noted that she was the only female barrister to speak. In January 2018, she was announced as the next Principal of Mansfield College, Oxford: she took up the appointment in September 2018.[1][2][3][4] She has written many articles and books on judicial review, human rights and equality, including having co-authored seven editions of 'Blackstone's Guide to the Human Rights Act 1998'.
