Helen Elizabeth Hayes MP (born 8 August 1974)[1] is a British Labour Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Dulwich and West Norwood since the May 2015 general election.[2] Prior to being elected as an MP, Hayes was a Councillor for the College ward of Southwark Council[3] in 2010[4] and 2014.[5]
Early life and career
Hayes attended Ormskirk Grammar School, a comprehensive secondary school based in Ormskirk, near Liverpool in the northwest of England.[6] She was an undergraduate at Balliol College, Oxford.[7]
After university, Hayes worked as a town planner. She became managing partner of her own town planning company, Urban Practitioners, before becoming a partner at London architectural practice[7] Allies and Morrison.[8]
Hayes is a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, a member of the King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and is also a trustee of Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate.[8]
At the 2017 general election, Hayes increased her vote share from 27,772 (56.4%) to 39,096 (69.6%); she was 28,156 votes ahead of the second-placed Conservative Party candidate.
Personal life
Hayes is married to Ben Jupp; the couple have two children.[6] Her sister-in law is Rachel Jupp, the Editor of Panorama, the BBC's current affairs series.[9]
