Hassan is a city and the district headquarters of Hassan district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town is situated 980 m (3,220 ft) above sea level.[1] It is named after the Hasanamba temple.[2] Hassan is 183 kilometres (114 mi) west of Bangalore, 119 kilometres (74 mi) north of Mysore, and 171 kilometres (106 mi) east of Mangalore by road. The urban population in 2011 was 133,436.[3]
History
Hassan dates from beginnings of the Hoysala Empire in the 11th century.[4][5]
Demographics
As of the 2011 Indian census,[3] the town of Hassan had an urban population of 133,436. Males were 49.5% of the population and females 50.5%. The average literacy rate was 80.8%. Male literacy was 82.7%, and female literacy was 78.9%. 10.1% of the population was under the age of 7.
Education
Hassan has Government Medical and Engineering colleges. Malnad College of Enginnering is one of the renowned colleges in South Karnataka.
Transport
Road
Hassan is connected by National Highway NH-75 which connects capital city Bangalore and port city Mangalore.
Railway
Hassan is an important railway junction and is connected to the major cities of Karnataka, namely, Bangalore, Hubli, Mangalore and Mysore. The completion of the Hassan-Bangalore line paved way for a direct railway connection from Hassan to Bangalore which before was fulfilled by trains either running through Arsikere or Mysore. This reduced the travel time as well. Trains to Mangalore go via Sakleshpura (Hassan district) through the scenic Western Ghats which is a feast for nature lovers.
Airport
A greenfield airport has been thought of near Bhuvanahalli village which is around 7 kilometers from Hassan town.
Climate
Tropical savanna climates have monthly mean temperature above 18 °C (64 °F) in every month of the year and typically a pronounced dry season, with the driest month having precipitation less than 60mm (2.36 in) of precipitation. According to the Köppen Climate Classification, Hassan has a Tropical savanna climate (Aw).[6]
