He became secretary of Bury in 1888, and was manager/secretary of Bury for twenty-five years until his death from pleurisy in 1913.[1]
Under his managerial control, Bury entered the Football League Second Division in 1894–95, gaining promotion to the First Division at the first attempt. Thereafter, Bury had a continuous run in the First Division for sixteen years, their best position being fifth. They were relegated at the end of the 1911–12 season.
Hamer led the Lancashire club to two FA Cup-Final victories, in 1900 and 1903, which they won 4–0 and 6–0 respectively.
