Harnett Central High School

Harnett Central High School is a high school located in Angier, North Carolina. HCHS is one of six high schools in Harnett County, which also include, Western Harnett, Triton, Overhills, the alternative school and Harnett Early College which is located in Dunn, NC. Harnett Central High School's mascot is the HCHS Trojan. The school colors are burgundy and gold. The physical address of Harnett Central is 2911 Harnett Central Road, Angier, NC 27501-9804. The telephone number is 919-639-6161. The feeder school for Harnett Central High is Harnett Central Middle School. According to the latest NCES statistical data for school year 2015-2016, the Total Students are 1541; Classroom Teacher FTE is 88.32 and Student Teacher Ratio is 17.45.[1]

History

Ground was broken for Harnett Central High School in October 1975. Those present were Superintendent R.A. Gray, Harnett County Commissioners, and the student council presidents of the four high schools which would compose Harnett Central and they are: Lafayette, Buies Creek, Angier, and Lillington. The construction of Harnett Central took approximately two years and the doors opened to students on September 7, 1977 with Jerry R. Ennis as the first principal. He remained principal until 1990 when he was elevated to the position of Human Resources Director for Harnett County Schools. Don Wilson became principal and following his retirement, he was followed by Kenneth John Jernigan and following his retirement, he was followed by Chris Mace. Cynthia Gordon followed Chris Mace until she was replaced by the Harnett County Board of Education on October 12, 2018. The current principal is Catherine Jones, former principal at Harnett Primary School.[2]

Notable Alumni

Class of 1979 member Rhoda Griffis is a graduate of the N.C. School of the Arts. She is an actress in Hollywood and has appeared in various movies such as Love Field; Walk the Line; The Hunger Games; Guardians of the Galaxy 2; and the television series, Army Wives.[3] Class of 1989 member Jon Matthews is a graduate of East Carolina with a BS in Business Administration; MBA from ECU; Education Specialist Degree from Wingate University; and a Doctorate in Education. Jon started work with Electronic Data Systems in Raleigh, NC before joining the faculty of CCCC in Sanford in August 2001 teaching business courses. Later Jon became Dean of University Transfer and Dean of Business and Media Technologies. Jon is a graduate of Leadership Harnett in 2015. Jon holds many honors and recognitions as well as professional associations. Jon was chosen to become the third Provost of the Harnett County Campus of CCCC at Lillington following in the footsteps of Bill Tyson and Bob Garrett.[4] Another set of alumni are the Class of 1996 duo Rhett James McLaughlin and Charles Lincoln "Link" Neal III who have formed an entertainment group known as Rhett and Link and have been seen on YouTube and other outlets such as the Tonight Show.[5]
