Dr. Hansa Yogendra (born 1947) is an Indian yoga guru, author and researcher and TV personality.[1][2][3] She is director of Mumbai based The Yoga Institute, a government recognized non-profit organization and the oldest organized yoga center in the world, founded in 1918.[4][5]

She was TV presenter of the television series Yoga for Better Living, aired on DD National in 1980s.[6] She is chairperson of Yoga Certification Committee for Quality Council of India (QCI)[7] and President of International Board of Yoga.[5] She also serves as Vice President of the Indian Yoga Association.

Early life

Born on October 8, 1947 to Jitendra Phulchand Patni and Tara Patni, in a Jain family. She completed her graduation in science from Mithibai College. Later, she complete her Yoga teacher training course at The Yoga Institute. She also holds a degree in Law from the Government Law College, Mumbai. She received a Ph.D. from The Open International University for Complimentary Medicines in February 2018.[8]

In 1991, She was invited by the National Council of Educational Research and Training along with Jayadeva Yogendra to advise on formulating a Yoga education syllabus for schools in India. She has conducted several seminars and lecture tours in India and in Canada, Pakistan, Europe, Hong Kong, Australia and USA.[9]

Personal life

She married to Jayadeva Yogendra[10] in 1973. She is daughter-in-law of Shri Yogendra.[11][12]

  • Vocational Excellence Award by Rotary Club of Bombay in 1994.
  • Recognized for her contribution to Women's Health through the award presented by Society for the Promotion of Area Resource Centres –SPARC.
  • Special Award by The International Association of Yoga Therapists for pioneering work in Yoga Therapy, Yoga education and research in 2011.
  • Awarded with Yoga Tapaswini title at Pune International Yoga Week.
  • Award of Excellence by Podar International School for her contribution in the field of Yoga ducation.
  • She was conferred with Special Award by Lions Clubs International on June 21, 2015.
  • Invited as the Keynote speaker at International Conference on Yoga for Holistic Health at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on the topic of Contribution of Yoga for World Peace on June 2, 2015.
  • Rotary International Award 2017 by the Rotary International for her contribution to spread the awareness of Yoga at the Annual Rotary International District conference; at Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai.
  • She was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 for being an ambassador of yoga for peace and harmony, at the Annual Rotary International District conference; at Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai.
  • Invited as a chief guest who spoke on the 'qualities of yoga teacher' at Pune International Yoga Festival on January 6, 2018, held at Chinmaya Vibhooti Ashram, Pune.

  • She received a Ph.D. from The Open International University for Complimentary Medicines in February 2018.
