Hans clan

Hans (हंस)  Hans (हांस) Han (हाँ) is a Jat clan[1] found in Punjab, India and Pakistan[2]. In Punjab its pronounced as 'हांस'. They are also found in Europe (German, Hans/Hanz).  Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia.

The Hans claim to be of Quraishi origin, and were one of the many tribes that occupied the upland of the Neeli Bar before the start of colonization of the Punjab by the British Imperial authorities in the 19th century.

Hans - The Hans clan claims descent from a Qureshi Arab who settled in Pakka Sidhar in Sahiwal District. His descendants intermarried with the Jat tribes of the neighbourhood, and as such became Jat. Found in Sahiwal, Khanewal, Layyah and Bhakkar districts.

According to 1911 census Hans was the principal Muslim Jat clan in districts with population:

  • Montgomery District (Sahiwal District) - Hans (964)
  • Mianwali District - Hansi (691)
  • Muzaffargarh District - Hans (1,029)
  • Bahawalpur State - Hans (580)
