Hakea costata, commonly known as the ribbed hakea, is a shrub of the genus Hakea native to Western Australia

Description

The erect non-lignotuberous shrub typically grows to a height of 0.3 to 2 metres (1.0 to 6.6 ft).[1] Branchlets It has densely villous branchlets around the time of flowering. The leaves found below the parts that are flowering are flat with a narrowly obovate to elliptic shape and a width of 2 to 5 millimetres (0.079 to 0.197 in). Closer to the flowering area the leaves are mostly linear, rigid and trigonous with a length of 8 to 16 mm (0.315 to 0.630 in) and a width of 1 to 2.5 mm (0.039 to 0.098 in). It blooms from July[2] to October and produces white-cream flowers.[1] Each solitary axillary inflorescence is clustered into elongate brushes containing 8 to 12 strongly perfumed flowers per axil. there is a cream-white perianth and the pistil has a length of 6 to 9 mm (0.236 to 0.354 in). Following flowering woody fruits with an obliquely and broadly ovate shape that is slightly curved form. The fruits are 9 to 10 mm (0.354 to 0.394 in) in length and 6 to 8 mm (0.236 to 0.315 in) wide and are shortly beaked. the black-brown seeds within have an obliquely broadly elliptic shape with a wide wing down one side and a narrower wing down the other.[2]

Taxonomy

The species was first formally described by the botanist Carl Meissner in 1845 as part of Johann Georg Christian Lehmann's work Proteaceae. Plantae Preissianae.[3]

The specific epithet comes from the Latin word costatus meaning ribbed, referring to the longitudinal ribbing of the leaves.[2]

Distribution

It is endemic to an area along the west coast in the Wheatbelt and Mid West regions of Western Australia from about Kalbarri in the north to Yanchep in the south[2] growing in sandy soils over limestone or laterite.[1]
