Hackney South by-election, 1922
The Hackney South by-election of 1922 was held on 18 August 1922, after the expulsion from the House of Commons of the incumbent MP, Horatio Bottomley, who was leader of the Independent Parliamentary Group which attacked the Lloyd George coalition from the right. Bottomley had a colourful career and had been expelled from the Commons before for fraud. He was expelled due to the collapse of another financial scheme with which he had been involved. Originally elected to Hackney South as a Liberal, he remained popular and came back as an Independent MP.
The by-election was won by the Coalition Unionist candidate Clifford Erskine-Bolst.[1]

Although elected a member of the 31st parliament, Erskine-Bolst was unable to take his seat as the House had adjourned, and did not meet again prior to dissolution.
