HMGNC (formerly known as Homogenic) is an Indonesian electropop trio established in 2002 in Bandung with original members Dina Dellyana (synths, programming), Risa Saraswati (vocals), and Grahadea Kusuf (synths, programming). Original lead vocalist, Saraswati left the band in 2009 to pursue her solo career, and succeeded by Amanda Syachridar.[1] The band was named after Icelandic singer Bjork’s 1997 album of the same name,[2] but renamed as HMGNC in 2015. They performed songs in both Indonesian and English and has produced five studio albums to date.

History

20022005: Early years and Epic Symphony

The band was formed in 2002 at Bandung, Indonesia with original members consisting of Risa Saraswati as lead vocals, Dina Dellyana and Grahadea Kusuf on synth and programming respectively. The band’s name was obtained from the Icelandic pop singer, Bjork's 1997 album of the same title, whom they admired as their highschool hero. However, the band avoid trying to resemble her music.

In 2004, the band signed with Indonesian indie label, FFWD Records and later released their debut album, Epic Symphony. The album was mixed with trip-hop and downbeat electonic music with angelic vocals in the rising of electronic dance music (EDM) scene in Indonesia.[3]

20062009: Echoes of the Universe and Saraswati’s departure

On April 2, 2006, the band released their sophomore effort, Echoes of the Universe with four singles released from this album: "Utopia", "Kekal" ("Eternal"), "Mindless" and "Unfolding Symphony" marks the beginning of an electonic and indie pop influence in their musical style. Their songs was featured as the original soundtrack of an Indonesian indie film, Cin(T)a which marked the beginning of a collaboration between the band and writer/director Sammaria Simanjuntak which would continue to other projects, and enable the band perform live in London, Birmingham, Newcastle and Manchester.[4]

In 2009, lead vocalist Risa Saraswati left the band to pursue her solo career, resulting the band go on hiatus.[5]

20102011: Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom

In 2010, after a long hiatus in which some internal issues were dealt with, Homogenic returns to colourish the music industry, with Amanda Syachridar as the new vocalist replacing Risa Saraswati who left the band a year after, as well as shifting to a full-band format. These dramatic changes brought new color to their music, leading to the creation of sweet electronic tunes with mass appeal without losing its cutting edge.

The band released their third studio album, Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom on April 2, 2010 which described by the band as transitional process, in which their eclecticism came to life in a hail of lush melodies, playful instruments and stuttering beats. Two singles were released from this album: "Selingan Awan" and "Happy Without You".[6]

20122016: Let’s Talk and new name

In 2012, the band signed contract with UNKL347 and released their fourth album, Let's Talk.[7]

In 2013, the band reteamed with Sammaria Simanjutak to produce a soundtrack for the film Demi Ucok for which they contributed its music score, "Get Up and Go" was the first single on this album was also featured along with new music from other prominent Indonesian indie acts on Organic Records compilation Radio Killed the TV Star. It was later followed by its second single, "Takkan Berhenti Disini", which gained rave responses from Indonesian junglist and drum bass scenes. Despite its Indonesian lyrics, the song managed to sweep three main awards at the Voice Independent Music Awards (VIMA) 2013, landing the Best Electronic Dance Song, Best Electro Dance Act and Thank You for Existing Awards.

In 2015, the band released their new single, "Today and Forever" and "Memories That Last a Dream", as well as changed their name from Homogenic to HMGNC.

2017present: Fifth studio album

In 2017, the band released their fifth studio album, which is self-titled HMGNC.[8] The album saw the band reunite with their former lead vocalist, Risa Saraswati.[9]
