Gritty is the official team mascot for the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Philadelphia Flyers. [1] Introduced in 2018, the mascot drew widespread comment for its frightening appearance and was embraced by the American left as "a symbol of progressive politics and resistance to Trumpism."[2]
Description
Gritty is a 7-foot furry orange creature with googly eyes who wears Flyers gear.[3][4] Gritty was created by David Raymond, the first man to portray the Phillie Phanatic,[5] and was introduced on September 24, 2018. The mascot has been compared to the Phillie Phanatic, the mascot for the Philadelphia Phillies.[6] Grittty made his debut on September 24, 2018, and appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon several days later.[7][8] Many sources brought attention to his appearance, which could be construed as frightening.[6][7]
