Gridiron Classic (2006–2009)
The Gridiron Classic was the name of an annual post-season college football game played from 2006 through 2009. It featured the league champions from the Pioneer Football League (PFL) and Northeast Conference (NEC).[1] These conferences had not previously received bids to the Division I FCS football playoffs (formerly the Division I-AA) tournament. Prior to the Gridiron Classic, the NEC had previously been tied to the ECAC Bowl, which ended in 2003.
The game matched up the champions, unless one of the teams received an at-large playoff bid.[2] Structurally, it was a bowl game (at the time it was the only bowl game at the I-AA level), even as it did not use the word "Bowl" in its name; it was the only bowl not to have a set location.
The game on December 6, 2008 was televised on the YES Network from University Field in Albany, New York.
