The grey-cheeked bulbul (Alophoixus bres) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found from the Malay Peninsula to the Greater Sunda Islands. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

Taxonomy and systematics

The grey-cheeked bulbul was originally described in the genus Lanius and later classified in Criniger until moved to the genus Alophoixus in 2009.[2] Alternate names for the grey-cheeked bulbul include the grey-cheeked bearded bulbul, olive white-headed bulbul and scrub bulbul.

Subspecies

Three subspecies are recognized.[3] Until 2010, the Palawan bulbul was also considered as a subspecies of the grey-cheeked bulbul:[4]

  • A. b. tephrogenys - (Jardine & Selby, 1833): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Trichophorus (a synonym for Criniger). Found on the Malay Peninsula and eastern Sumatra
  • Brown-cheeked bulbul (A. b. bres) - (Lesson, 1832): Found on Java and Bali
  • A. b. gutturalis - (Bonaparte, 1850): Originally described as a separate species in the genus Trichophorus. Found on Borneo
