Gregory Nelson (born 31 January 1988) is a Dutch professional footballer who plays for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League, as a winger.[1]

Career

Born in Amsterdam, he played in the youth teams of AZ Alkmaar.[2] Nelson made his debut for AZ in the Dutch Eredivisie on 30 September 2007 against Heracles Almelo.

He spent the 2009-10 season on loan at RBC Roosendaal. The loan contract had an option to purchase the player, an option which RBC took advantage of on 11 June 2009.[3] Nelson was released by RBC on 11 January 2010.[4]

After six months without a club, he signed for CSKA Sofia in June 2010.[5] In January 2012, he signed for Ukrainian club Metalurh Donetsk on a three-and-a-half year contract.[6][7] On 11 March 2012, Nelson made his official debut for the team from Donetsk, playing the first 74 minutes of the 1:1 home draw with Metalist Kharkiv in a Ukrainian Premier League match.[8]

Botev Plovdiv

Several months after the bankruptcy of FC Metalurh Donetsk, on 9 October 2015, Gregory Nelson returned to Bulgaria and signed a contract until the end of the season with Botev Plovdiv.[9]

On 23 October Gregory Nelson scored the winning goal against Pirin Blagoevgrad in his debut for Botev Plovdiv.[10]

On 29 November Nelson scored twice during the 4:2 away defeat from Litex Lovech.[11] He was selected for the man of the match, despite his team's loss.[12]

On 6 March 2016, Nelson scored a controversial goal during the 1-1 away draw with Beroe Stara Zagora.[13] He was chosen for man of the match. In an interview immediately after the game, he admitted that the ball hit his hand before he scored the goal.[14]

Kaisar

On 16 January 2017, Nelson signed for Kazakhstan Premier League side FC Kaisar,[15] but his contract was terminated shortly after for personal reasons.[16]

Al-Muharraq

After his FC Kaisar contract was cancelled, Nelson joined Bahraini Premier League side Al-Muharraq,[16] scoring in his first game for the club, their AFC Cup group game against Saham Club.[17]

Chennaiyin

In September 2017 he signed for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League.[18][19]
