Great Escape (Hangul: 대탈출; RR: daetalchul) is a South Korean television entertainment program, Season 1 was televised on tvN Sundays at 10:40 pm (KST) starting 1 July and ended on 23 September 2018. There is a plan for Season 2 which will be broadcast in 2019.[1]

Overview

Before each phase of the escape challenge, the members first gather in the bus. Since the second challenge (third episode) of Season 1, the program team will assign the captain (주장) of the period in response to the performance of the members of the previous challenge, and the captain will receive an armband. Prior to arriving the location, members will wear eye masks, and the staff will lead the members to the start point in the large secret room. After fulfilling the instructions of the staff, the members can remove the eye mask. In each challenge, members need to use the clues in the room to gradually explore the large secret room until all members escape from the location.[2]

Each challenge has a different theme, and members will learn about the context of the background story from the clues during the exploration. In addition to finding and cracking the clues, members may need to interact with the story characters played by the staff (such as helping the character, leading the character to escape, etc.) before they can escape from the large secret room. There is no stipulated time limit for each escape challenge, it will only end when all members and story characters (if any) have successfully escaped.

The slogan of the show is "나가야산다" (Escape and Survive) as shown in the promotional poster for Season 1.

Found the password (2-5-3-8) under the cloth of the jig-saw puzzle and open Gate 2.
6. Arcade Room (오락실)
Jang Dong-min scored greater than 60 points on the basketball and receive 2nd part of the password (3).
Kim Dong-hyun scored greater 850 on the King of Hammer and receive 3rd part of password (0).
Kim Dong-hyun scored greater 850 on the Right Hook Power machine and receive 1st part of password (8).
All members failed to score greater 650 on the soccer ball machine to receive 4th part of password.
Found the password (5-0-7-8) on the arcade machine to open the Mother Room.
7. Mother Room (어머니 방)
Yoo Byung-jae searched the enlarged map in the room and found password (7-0-7-1) for Gate 3 and passwords for the previous 2 gates.
8. Security room (보안실)
Teamwork by the members to solve the arithmetic questions. Use the partial password from the Arcade Room (8-3-0-2) to open the safe.
Found a clue in the safe and password (6-3-5-2) by placing on the map on the back of Jang Dong-min to open the door of FINAL GATE.

11 6 9 September 2018 Tae-yang High School
(태양 여고)
1. Classroom 2-1 (교실 2-1)
  • Members are being placed into a classroom setting and to take a world history test with a class of high school girls. The history teacher announced that all students and members are able to go home if they can answer the questions without errors.
  • Two of the students were passing paper notes (intercepted by the members) to meet up at the Infirmary Room after the test and the physical education teacher will help them.
  • Members are punished for not answering correctly for the world history test and are told by the history teacher to stay in the punishment position till the end of the period.
  • The two students (Kim Mi-ra and Gu Ha-li) were caught passing paper notes by the history teacher and were ask to go to the Consultation Room.
  • The history teacher dismissed the students and left for the Consultation Room. The members started searching the Heo Sa-ra's locker and found a photo with 3 girls (Kim Mi-ra, Heo Sa-ra and Gu Ha-li). Ho-dong found a message at the back of the photo stating that Sa-ra is missing and both Mi-ra and Ha-li are all out to find the reason.
  • Members deduction about this challenge is to find the whereabouts of Heo Sa-ra.
  • The test paper left by Mi-ra has a drawing of something being ripped open.
  • Jong-min found on the class register that Sa-ra has withdraw from school as she did not attend classes for 20 times without valid reasons. 5 other students were transferred.
  • At the end of the period, the history teacher left the Consultant Room and locked the gate of the corridor to go to the second floor. Members have to find ways to open the gate.
  • Ho-dong forcefully broke the lock of Mi-ra locker but found no clues in it.
  • Shin-dong found out from the class register that the History Teacher's name is Ge Su-sang

2. Consultation Room (상담실)

  • The members enter the room any found no one in the room as they thought Mi-ra and Ho-li are in the room. They searched the room for more clues and found the paper, that Mi-ra and Ha-li were passing around, in the waste paper bin. This showed that the History teacher was in the room.
  • P.O found the 3 consultation files of Kim Mi-ra, Heo Sa-ra and Gu Ha-li. Byung-jae started to investigate the records in the 3 consultation files and observed that all 3 girls has some family issues.
  • Dong-hyun observed 2 bottles of empty "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" on the table and deduce that Mi-ra and Ha-li did enter the room.
  • Shin-dong found a clue from the paper shredder and the members start piecing the shredded clues. The clue is "Do not read". The staff prank the members and "bombard" the members with white flour when all the members read the "clue".

3. Infirmary Room (양호실)

  • The Infirmary teacher's name is Ge Bo-lin. Jong-min found a note in Ge Bo-lin's gown and the note says "Sir, the password to the base is on the whiteboard, please erase it once memorize for security reason". Members found the clue (4-4-6-9) by erasing the whiteboard.
  • Ho-dong forcefully opened a metal cabinet, hoping to find a clue like what he did in episode 1 but found nothing.
  • Shin-dong picked the lock of a miniature cabinet and receive a clue and paper. The paper is about the 2 bottles of empty "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" on the table of Consultation Room. The clue is the antidote for the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic".
  • When exiting the room, members witness four person in dark robe exiting from the upper floor and walked towards the other end of the corridor.

4. Library (도서관)

  • In the book loan records, members observed that Mi-ra and Ho-li have loaned out a book call "Sa-ra's key".
  • Dong-hyun for a book that presumed to be the key to open the miniature cabinet. Since they have opened the miniature cabinet, the key was not longer available.
  • Shin-dong observed one of the bookshelves is odd and asked to Jong-min investigate. Jong-min found out one of the bookshelves can be lifted and found a door. The used the password (4-4-6-9) to open the door.

5. Secret Den (비밀 아지트)

  • Members found a video clip on the computer filming about a sacrificial ritual in progress. Byung-jae and P.O went back to the Consultant Room tho retrieve the test paper with all correct answer and return to Secret Den to continue with the discussion.
  • Behind the posters of male idol groups, members found a clue linking to the History teacher.
    • History teacher (Ge Su-sang) is actually a chief priest. Infirmary teacher (Ge Bo-lin) is the daughter of Ge Su-sang but is not on Ge Su-sang side.
    • Ge Bo-lin has filmed the sacrificial ritual to exposed hers father's misdeed.
    • The sacrificial ritual requires 11 young girls' soul for the Sun god to revive. 9 girls (including Sa-ra) were listed as the missing people for the past 4 years.
    • All the teachers are very respectful to chief priest Ge Su-sang.
    • All sacrificial being will be mummified.
    • Members also found the map of the second floor. Temple (신전), Preparation Room (제사 준비실), Follower Dormitory (신도 생활관) and Rooftop.
  • Byung-jae found more clues from the computer. The members practice on how to recite the sacrificial phrase so that they might be able to join the ritual secretly.
  • Members again witness four person in dark robe carrying a stretcher with a Mi-ra laying on it. The fifth person in dark robe is presumably the Infirmary teacher (Ge Bo-lin) that dropped a bunch of keys on the floor.

6. 1st Floor Corridor (1층 복도)

  • Members use the long poles and ropes from the Consultation Room and Secret Den to improvise as a "hook" to retrieve the keys and unlock the gate of the corridor that was locked by history teacher (Ge Su-sang) earlier.

6.1 Store (매점)

  • After unlocking the gate, members rushed to the Store as they were famished.
  • Ho-dong's plan is to get the members to find the dark robes to disguise as the followers to save Mi-ra.

7. Changing Room (탈의실)

  • Byung-Jae and P.O searched the Changing Room to find the dark robes that are put aside for washing.
  • Remaining members joined in to searched the room. Dong-hyun accidentally found a push button when playing with the pile of sand in a container which reveal a secret room behind the mirror.

8. Sacrificial Waiting Room (희생양 대기실)

  • The room has Kim Mi-ra's coat on one of the table. Members also found Gu Ha-li laying unconsciously on the table. Byung-Jae sprayed the antidote that was recovered from the Infirmary Room to revive Ha-li from the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic".
  • Members asked Ha-li if she can recollect what happened to her and Mi-ra. Ha-li reply was she drank the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" given by the history teacher and became unconscious and Mi-ra also did the same thing. Ha-li presume that Mi-ra was the first to be sacrificed.
  • Ha-li has some knowledge on how the followers will patrol the 2nd floor and members need to be stealthy. Ha-li reveal that the dark robe are available in the 2nd floor Follower Dormitory and Mi-ra should be in the 2nd floor Preparation Room. Members need to hurry to rescue Mi-ra before she is sacrificed.
  • Ho-dong's plan is to quickly go to the 2nd floor Follower Dormitory to put on the dark robe to disguise as the followers and go to the Preparation Room to rescue Mi-ra.
  • Ha-li suggested to first locate the whereabouts of Mi-ra.
  • At the 1st Floor Corridor, Byung-Jae mentioned that the members do not have the key to open the gate to the 2nd floor. Ha-li mentioned that the key should be in one of the books of the Library and Byung-Jae explained to Ha-li that there is no key in the book.Mi-ra was the last person to have borrowed the book. Members suddenly remembered that Mi-ra's coat was left in the Sacrificial Waiting Room, found the key and unlock gate to the 2nd floor.

9. Preparation Room (제사 준비실)

  • Members and Ha-li entered the room and found the partially mummified Mi-ra.
  • As Jong-min tried to retrieve the antidote to revive Mi-ra, the Infirmary teacher (Ge Bo-lin) appeared. She was shocked and told the members and Ha-li to hide as the followers are approaching.
  • The followers and Infirmary teacher left with the partially mummified Mi-ra to the Temple. Ho-dong was sad that they should have bring the antidote along and save Mi-ra.
  • Byung-Jae found Ha-li's photograph in the sarcophagus. Ha-li is supposed to be the 11th girl to be sacrificed.
  • P.O secretly return to the Sacrificial Waiting Room to retrieve the antidote.
  • With Mi-ra being brought to the Temple to be sacrificed, Ho-dong hurried the members to quickly retrieve the dark robes.

10. Follower Dormitory (신도 생활관)

  • Jong-min and Dong-hyun secretly entered the room to retrieve some dark robes as they also discovered that there are some followers in the room watching the television show.
  • Jong-min was excited to find 7 dark robes at one corner of the room. The remaining members also secretly entered the room.
    • Jong-min managed to be the first to put on the robe and scared the remaining members and Ha-li out of their wits to the Preparation Room as they thought they were being discovered.
    • In the Preparation Room, the members discussed that everyone was to go back to the Sacrificial Waiting Room. Jong-min re-enter the Follower Dormitory to retrieve the remaining 6 sets dark robes and return to the Sacrificial Waiting Room.
    • In the Sacrificial Waiting Room, members and Ha-li put on the dark robes.
    • Ho-dong entered the Store and found out the use of the remaining bunch of keys. One of the keys opened the door of the faulty vending machine to the Secret Laboratory.

11. Secret Laboratory (비밀 연구실)

  • The Secret Laboratory is to manufacture the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic". Byung-jae remembered from the video that the followers will drink the "Holy water" during the ritual, the members can secretly put the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" to the "Holy water" and save Mi-ra once the followers have fallen unconscious.
  • Byung-jae found the recipe for making the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic", "Holy water" and courage pill (용기환). The recipe book explained the usage of each potion. The anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic takes effect after 5 minutes to cause the users to be unconscious. After the followers has taken the anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic, members discussed that they should delay the ritual to let the anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic to take effect.
  • Members found out that the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic", "Holy water" and courage pill were already made in advance and left one the table.
  • Dong-hyun and Shin-dong each ate a courage pill.
    • Members and Ha-li returned to the Follower Dormitory to find a route to the Temple as the main door to the Temple is locked. They were unable to find any alternate route. They end up going back to the Preparation Room after learning that the ritual will start ten minutes.
    • Members and Ha-li go to the Secret Den to review the ritual video. Members discussed ways to mix the "Holy water" and "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" during the ritual.

12. Temple (신전)

  • Members and Ha-li joined the sacrificial ritual. Byung-jae accidentally fell to the ground to create a distraction while Shin-dong and Jong-min will take care of Byuang-jae. Ho-dong and Dong-hyun will block the view of P.O pouring the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" into the pool of "Holy water".
  • Members created many distractions and delays to let the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" to take effect. Once the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" took effect, those who drank the "anti-drowsiness nourishment tonic" started to faint.
  • Members use the antidote to revive Mi-ra and Infirmary teacher (Ge Bo-lin). Ge Bo-lin was unable to escape with the members, Mi-ra and Ha-li due to his father (history teacher).
  • Members decode the password using the answer from the world history test which open a door.

13. Secret Den (밀실)

  • In the room, there is a window that is pad-locked. Shin-dong and Dong-hyun were selected to retrieve the key from a hole of the false wall with worms and centipedes since they have taken the courage pill. Dong-Hyun finally retrieve the key after several attempts.
  • After unlocking the window, members and the 2 schoolgirls discovered that there is no way to go downward instead must go to the rooftop.

14. Rooftop (옥상)

  • Shin-dong leaped from the rooftop to the inflated balloon and open the front door of the school to left the remaining members and 2 schoolgirls out.
  • Escape successfully!!! (with the story character)
