"Gravity Hurts" is a song by Danish rock band Cryoshell featuring the Budapest Art Orchestra, released as the lead single from their upcoming sophomore studio album Next to Machines on January 12, 2018. Written by Mikkel Maltha, the song was recorded in 2017 and produced by Jacob Hansen. It is a symphonic pop remake of an alternative rock song released by the band ten years prior.

The single is the second re-recording of "Gravity Hurts", which was initially produced for the Lego toy series Bionicle for use in its promotional campaign of their 2008 Phantoka sets. Originally sung by Niels Brinck, it was subsequently re-recorded in 2011 with fellow Danish singer Tine Midtgaard, before a version featuring incumbent band vocalist Christine Lorentzen was produced.

Background and recording

"Gravity Hurts" was written by Mikkel Maltha in late 2007. The original version was sung by Niels Brinck and produced by Eddie Simonsen in 2007 as a musical score in the marketing campaign for a wave of Lego Bionicle toy sets released in 2008, following in the success of the group's songs "Creeping in My Soul" and "Face Me" used for previous Bionicle toy waves.

A second version featuring Danish singer Tine Midtgaard was recorded in late 2011 at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark and produced by Jacob Hansen. It premiered on January 8, 2013 on Cryoshell's official YouTube channel. The remix was later announced to be included in a global reissue of Cryoshell's self-titled as one of two bonus tracks (the other being "Breakout" that also features Midgaard). However, a release date has not been confirmed and the reissue is thought to have been scrapped.

A third version of the song was recorded in 2017 with incumbent vocalist Christine Lorentzen and was again produced by Hansen. As opposed to the first two versions which were alternative rock songs, the re-recording was composed as a symphonic piece and features orchestral arrangements from the Budapest Art Orchestra. It was released as the first single from Cryoshell's forthcoming second studio album Next to Machines on January 12, 2018.

Promotion and media usage

The original version of "Gravity Hurts" was used as the musical score for the marketing campaign of the Lego Bionicle Phantoka toy wave of 2008; featuring in commercials, animated shorts and online games promoting the Phantoka characters, as well as in several retrospective videos looking back at the first eight years of the Bionicle franchise. It was released as a free MP3 download from the official Bionicle website on February 8, 2008.[1]

Music video

A music video for the original version of "Gravity Hurts" was shot in a recording studio in Denmark in early 2008. It premiered on the official Bionicle website on March 7, 2008. It focuses on vocalist Niels Brinck recording the song in the studio with guitarist Kasper Søderlund and features clips from various Bionicle animation shorts released between 2001–2008.

A music video for the 2018 single was shot during its recording and edited by Sune Daugaard. It premiered on June 6, 2018.
