Grand compounder

A Grand Compounder was a degree candidate at the University of Oxford who was required to pay extra for his degree because he had a certain high level of income. The amount of income in 1817 was a benefice rated in the Kings Books at £32, or other income in excess of £300.[1]

At the University of Cambridge the income threshold for a compounder was £26 13s 4d.[2]
