The Grand Hotel & Spa is Grade II listed, and is York’s only 5-star Hotel[1]. Opened in May 2010, it is an iconic Edwardian building with views of the York city walls and York Minster. The building was originally the Headquarters of the North Eastern Railway[2].

History

The Grand’s building was originally the North Eastern Railway's Headquarters (then one of the richest businesses in Britain) [3]; Designed by architects William Bell (one of NER’s own Architects, who produced the basic structural design) and commissioned architect Horace Field (who worked on the external and internal design). It is believed their design won a silver medal at an exhibition in Paris in 1904[3]. The construction took place between 1900 and 1906.

More recently it re-opened as The Grand Hotel in May 2010 after a 25 million pound renovation[2], originally as the Cedar Court Grand Hotel, before being sold 4 years later to the Splendid Hospitality Group for an undisclosed sum[1].

Facilities

The hotel currently has 107 rooms (13 Suites), a Luxury Spa, 2 Restaurants ("The Rise", and the 3 AA-Rosette “Hudsons”), Business meeting facilities for up to 120 people, and acts as a Wedding venue[4].

The Boardroom won “Best Boardroom/Small Meeting room” award at the 2017 Conference Hospitality Awards[5]

An extension is currently under construction (to complete before the end of 2017) which will add an extra 100 rooms [6]

Management

The general manager is Philip Bolson [7] . The Hotel is owned by the Splendid Hospitality Group.
