"Graduation (Friends Forever)" is a single by American pop singer Vitamin C released in 2000 through Elektra Entertainment. It was the third single from her debut studio album, Vitamin C. Upon release, the single reached the top 10 in Australia, Canada, and Ireland, as well as number 38 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song is well known for being played at high school graduations and at some middle school and elementary school promotions.

Content

The opening lyrics of "Graduation (Friends Forever)" allude to "All the Young Dudes" by Mott the Hoople. The song is heavily based on Pachelbel's Canon in D, transposed to the key of C major, and also includes the opening of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 30.[1] Some radio stations played an alternate version, which features clips of students talking about graduation dispersed through the song. After the song became popular, the album was reissued in United States to include both versions, with the "Student Interview Mix" being a hidden track.[2] Several years after the song's initial peak, Radio Disney made a new edit to cater to their younger demographic, in which the interviews of students graduating high school were replaced by interviews of students graduating elementary school and middle school.[3]

Commercial performance

The single reached number 12 on the Top 40 Mainstream, number 23 on the Rhythmic Top 40 and number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 30, 2000, after reaching the Top 40 on May 9, becoming her second single to reach the Top 40. "Graduation (Friends Forever)" reached number 21 in New Zealand, number 13 in Sweden, and number four on the Irish Singles Chart. Although it was a hit in Ireland, it did not chart in the United Kingdom.[4] The song found the most commercial success in Australia, where it climbed to number two in December 2000 and was certified Platinum by the ARIA.[5]

Music video

The music video for "Graduation (Friends Forever)" was directed by Gregory Dark and was filmed at Van Nuys High School. The video is featured in the DirecTV original show Rock and a Hard Place.

Charts and certifications

  • Was featured during the prom scene in the 2012 film 21 Jump Street.
  • Was featured during the car scene in the movie Scary Movie 2. In the scene, the main character Cindy is driving to Hell House while the song is playing on the radio. She starts singing along (albeit horribly off-key) until midway through the song, when she is interrupted by Vitamin C herself who tells her to stop it.
  • The song was covered by T-Squad on their only album T-Squad.
