Glen David Gold (born 1964) is an American author, best known for the novels Carter Beats the Devil and Sunnyside.

Early life

Gold attended Wesleyan University and received his BA from UC Berkeley in 1987. He received his MFA in creative writing at the University of California at Irvine.

Career

Novels

Gold writes in a narrative style. His first novel Carter Beats the Devil (2001) received significant critical acclaim,[1] and his second novel, Sunnyside (2009) was well received for presenting fully rounded, emotional characters.[2][3]

Memoirs

Gold's first memoir, I Will Be Complete, was published on June 26, 2018 by Knopf, an imprint of Penguin Random House.[4] Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians, called it "[a]n extraordinary account of an extraordinary life," and Joseph Fink, co-author of Welcome to Night Vale, said Gold "is one of the best storytellers working today. He could write about anything and make it gripping."[4]

Short stories

Short stories of his—including "The Tears of Squonk"—have appeared in a number of issues of McSweeney's.[5]

Television

Gold wrote a single episode of the cartoon television show Hey Arnold!. This episode was aired in 1997. In it, the titular Arnold stages an amateur magic show and "disappears" his friend Helga, who escapes during the trick, causing Arnold and the others to think she really has disappeared.

Comic books

Gold has also ventured into comic books, writing a short story featuring Will Eisner's classic creation The Spirit. The story, entitled "One Hundred!", features artwork by Eduardo Risso and appeared in DC's The Spirit #13.

Podcasts

Gold co-wrote an episode of the podcast Welcome to Night Vale entitled "The Auction" in 2013, and contributed to an episode entitled "The Woman from Italy" in 2014.[6] He also wrote the three-episode arc "eGemony," in 2017.[7]

Personal life

He was married to, and is divorced from, the novelist Alice Sebold.[8]
