The Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences main hub is the purposed built BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre facility at the University of Glasgow[1]. The Director of Institute is Prof Rhian Touyz, MBBCh, MSc(Med), PhD. She is the British Heart Foundation(BHF) Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine and Director of the BHF Centre of Research Excellence. The Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences (ICAMS) is a research-intensive institute of basic and clinical scientists and clinicians. ICAMS is home to a British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence that focuses on vascular science and biomedicine. Research is the prime activity of the Institute and forms the central core around which all our other activities, including teaching, training, clinical care and public outreach take place. ICAMS has on average 80 principal investigators annually focusing on research in three primary areas: Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic pathophysiology. Research is conducted in an integrated and translational manner addressing diseases such as heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, stroke and renovascular disease.

Mission

To enhance human health by exploring causes and mechanisms of cardiovascular disease and advancing and implementing discoveries leading to improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Our structure provides an environment of excellence in research, training and learning.

Description

There are around 175 research and support staff, as well as PhD & MD students (116 in 2017-18). Research is the primary activity of the Institute and forms the central core around which all activities take place. Our objectives we need to further support our areas of strength, but also contrate more effort and resources on the areas identified as demonstrating potential to be fields of research excellence. Staff are currently focused around 3 main themes – Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic. Emerging themes: renal, stroke, omics. Institute staff also run and contribute to Post Graduate Taught Programmes: MSc Cardiovascular Sciences, MSc Clinical Pharmacology, MSc Clinical Trials & Stratified Medicine, MSc Sports & Exercise Science & Medicine, MSc Stratified Medicine and Pharmacological Innovation.
