Gisela Kaplan

Gisela Kaplan (born 1944) is a leading Australian sociologist and author on subjects ranging from feminism to the behaviour of Australian birds. She is Honorary Professor of the Queensland Brain Institute[1] and Emeritus Professor University of New England, (UNE) Armidale.[2]

Career

Born in Berlin, Germany, Kaplan graduated from Monash University, Melbourne, with a PhD and was appointed a lecturer there in 1983. In the late 1980s moved to the University of New South Wales, where she focused her research on migrant health and ageing, and women's issues, and published her first book, Contemporary Western European Feminism.[3]

She has been an academic at the UNE since 1996,[4] collaborating on many research projects and publications with Lesley Rogers.(See co-authored publications below.)

In 2005 she submitted a second thesis, titled "Vocal behaviour of Australian magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen) : A study of vocal development, song learning, communication and mimicry in the Australia magpie", for which she was awarded a PhD in Veterinary Science by the University of Queensland.[5]

She retired from her position of Professor of Animal Behaviour at UNE in 2009, but continues working in her emeritus capacity. She has a considerable media presence, including many appearances on the ABC and being regularly interviewed about her publications as well as on birds, particularly the magpie.[4][6]

Kaplan was awarded an Honorary DSc by the University of New England in 2011.[7]

She was elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Ornithologists Union (AOU) in 2015.[8]
