Giorgio Cavazzano (born 19 October 1947) is an Italian cartoonist, and one of the most famous Disney cartoonists in the world.

Biography

He was born 19 October 1947 in Venice, Italy. At the age of twelve Giorgio started to work with his cousin, the cartoonist Luciano Capitanio, helping him ink comics for Mondadori, Dardo, and a comic story published in the magazine Voci d’Oltremare. Still a teenager, he started his apprenticeship at the renowned Italian cartoonist Romano Scarpa, and at the age of 15 ‑ from the issue n.70 of Topolino (December 1962) ‑ he became Scarpa's personal inker.

Giorgio made his debut as a cartoonist in 1967 with the story "Paperino e il singhiozzo a martello", while his first script was on "Zio Paperone e il cambio della guardia", in 1985.

In the beginning of his career, his style was affected by Romano Scarpa's style and the prevailing tradition of comic drawing of Carl Barks. Later Cavazzano develops his own distinctive style, which wins the hearts of fans and readers of all ages. His style marks a watershed between the traditional and the modern way of drawing Disney ducks and mice.

In his career, he has created numerous characters from Reginella to Umperio Bogarto, from OK Quack to Pandy Pap until the most recent one, Rock Sassi. In 1981, he started drawing Disney stories for the French weekly magazine Le Journal de Mickey and covers for the magazines Mickey Parade and Super Picsou Géant. Since 1994 Giorgio has been drawing covers and stories for the Scandinavian editor Egmont, among which the saga of Dragon Lords (2003).

In 1999, together with the writer Tito Faraci, he launches the Disney noir series of MM Mickey Mystery Magazine. Their artistic partnership leads him to draw a superhero: Set in Cavazzano's beloved Venice, Il segreto del vetro (2003) is the very first Spider-Man story realized entirely by Italians. This is not his only tribute to the Marvel world. The year after, Giorgio draws a cover for a special issue of Devil & Hulk for the 10th anniversary of Marvel Italy.

Among numerous other characters we need to mention at least Walkie & Talkie, Oscar & Tango, Smalto & Johnny, Timothy Titan and Captain Rogers. With Tiziano Sclavi, the inventor of Dylan Dog, Cavazzano draws the saga of Altai & Jonson. Important is also the partnership with Bonvi, the creator of Sturmtruppen, with whom he draws Maledetta galassia and La Città, published by Sergio Bonelli Editore.

Among Cavazzano's works, truly unforgettable are the Disney parodies of cinema masterpieces such as Casablanca of Michael Curtiz and La Strada of Federico Fellini, not to mention La vera storia di Novecento of Giuseppe Tornatore, based on the novel by Alessandro Baricco and Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The man without a past) of the great Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. In 2017 Topolino published Topo Maltese - Una ballata del topo salato, Cavazzano's homage to Hugo Pratt (written by Bruno Enna).

In addition to comics, Giorgio has produced a vast amount of illustrations and advertising material, among others for Eldorado, Fiat and Xerox.
