Gim clan of Gimhae (Hangul: 김해 김씨; Hanja: 金海 金氏) is one of the Korean clans. Their Bon-gwan is in Gimhae. Today, Gim clan of Gimhae is the largest clan group. Their founder was Suro, the king of Gaya confederacy. Gim Yu-sin who found Silla was well-known among his clan members. On top of that, Gimhae Heo clan and Incheon Lee clan also appointed the founders as Suro, and they also made Gimhae their Bon-gwan.[1] The two sons of Suro who call themselves Heo Hwang-ok’s surname, queen of Suro, founded Gimhae Heo clan.

Gimhae Heo clan was a queen of Suro. Her clan date back to Ashoka’s clan in India. She drifted in the sea after he left India. Then she arrived Gimhae. Finally, she became queen because Suro was captivated at first sight. Her grave has pictures relating to her family and her family trees. Only her clan’s members can browse the contents in her grave.

In 2004, scientific proof were shown that demonstrated Heo Hwang-ok’s person of Indian Origin. 徐廷송, a professor at Faculty of Medicine The Seoul University, and 김정일, a professor at Faculty of Medicine The Hallym University, reported their finding at the Korean Society of Genetics academy.[2] According to the finding, they analyzed remains in an old mound and they assume the remains are Heo Hwang-ok clan’s. Then they concluded that Heo Hwang-ok’s ancestor was not Northern Mongolia that is originated from Koreans but Southern Indian. Mitochondria contains DNA, so they extracted Mitochondria DNA to analyze the base arrangement.[2] Heo Hwang-ok may be a queen of Satavahana dynasty in India, and she came to Gaya confederacy in 48. Some suggest that Heo came from Tamil Nadu, this has long been suspected due to many Koreans words that sound similar to the words used in the region, so that’s certainly a possibility. But no one can know for sure, the academia is definitely split as to her origin. The connection between the two cultures is believed to date back to the reign of King Suro and Ayi of Pandya Kingdom in CE 45. Experts don't rule out the possibility of queen Huh taking Tamil culture to Korea with her when she left India. This was said by Korean envoy Kygsoo Kim.

She bore ten children. Two of them were given Heo’s surname, and it was the origin of Gimhae Heo clan. If person of Indian Origin is true, Gimhae Heo clan’s descendants have the mitochondria DNA which is originated from India and south Asia because Gimhae Heo clan’s descendants succeeded Heo Hwang-ok’s maternal DNA. 徐廷송 and 김정일 can get a conclusion using one of the four remains. They explained that detailed study was needed to strengthen their claim of person of Indian Origin.[2]

According to the Samguk Sagi, Gim Yu-sin was 12 th grandchildren of Suro.

In addition, according to the monument of Gim Yu-sin, his ancestor was a child of Shaohao who was a child of Yellow Emperor. Therefore, he regarded himself as one of the members of Gim clan.[note 1]
