Gharabaher is a Marathi movie released on 27 October 1999. The movie was produced by Ratan Madaan and directed by Sanjay Surkar. It tells a story of how the game of politics is played when a woman occupies a man’s chair.

Synopsis

When the government announces quotas to increase women's political representation, Annasaheb, an MLA for the past 30 years, compels his intelligent daughter Vasudha to take over from him and continue so that nothing changes for him and his family. In due course of time Vasudha realizes that she is a mere puppet in the hands of her father and that she has no power as an MLA.

Even when her wayward brother's atrocities increase, the family turns a blind eye. However, Sameer Shinde, Vasudha's college friend, opposes, and the family doesn’t take it too kindly resulting in, Sameer being murdered. Now Vasudha reaches her breaking point and vows to bring the killer to justice, even if it means breaking all ties with her family.

The cast includes Mohan Joshi, Sonali Kulkarni, Sachin Khedekar, Rima, Smita Talwalkar and Prashant Damle.

Awards and accolades

This movie won two National Awards (for Best Feature Film and Best Director) and eight Maharashtra State Awards (Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction, Best Costumes, Best Make-up and Best Screenplay).[1]
