Gerald Joseph Higgins (29 August 1909 in Chicago, Illinois - 20 December 1996 in Riverside, California[1][2]) was a United States Army Major General. He was famous for serving as the Chief of Staff for the 101st Airborne Division during the Second World War.

Early life

He was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 29, 1909 to William and Martha Higgins. He also had two brothers (William Jr. and Francis).[3][4][5][6]

Military service and assignments

Gerald served in the Army as an Enlisted man from October 3, 1927 to June 30, 1930[7] before being appointed to the United States Military Academy, later graduating in 1934 and being commissioned in the Infantry (ASN: 0-19530). He completed Infantry school in 1938 and went on to complete the Advanced Communications Officers' Course in 1939.[8]

He retired as a Major General on August 31, 1955.[16][17]

He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy in 1934.[22]

Personal life

He married a woman named Mary, together they a child named Robert.[23]
