George Wishart (moderator)

Very Rev Dr George Wishart DD (1703-1785) was a Scottish minister who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1748.[1] He was also chaplain in ordinary to the King and dean of the Chapel Royal.

Life

He was born in Edinburgh’s Old Town in 1703, the son of Very Rev Prof William Wishart, minister of the Tron Kirk on the Royal Mile.[2] His mother was Janet Murray (died 1744), daughter of Major William Murray of Touchadam.[3] His uncles included Admiral Sir James Wishart and George Wishart 1st baronet of Cliftonhall.

He studied divinity at Edinburgh University, graduating MA in 1719.[4] He was ordained in 1726 and took over at his father’s church at the Tron in 1730. He was elected moderator in 1748 whilst minister of Tron Kirk.

He died on 12 June 1785.

Family

In December 1727 he was married to Ann Campbell, daughter of John Campbell of Orchard. Their children included Jenny von Westphalen, four other daughters, and one son.
