GeoFS is a free online flight simulator based on the Cesium WebGL Virtual Globe,[1] which makes use of aerial imagery and provides a multi-player environment for pilots to interact with each other. GeoFS is exclusively built with web technologies and only requires almost any HTML5-based web browser to run.

History

Created by Xavier Tassin, it was launched in October 2010.[2] It was originally built on the Google Earth plug-in as GEFS-Online (Google Earth Flight Simulator).[3] On September 1, 2015, support for the Google Earth plugin ended, which nearly resulted in a complete shutdown of GEFS-Online. In January 2016, in light of the Google Earth plugin's termination, GEFS-Online migrated to CesiumJS, an open source virtual globe platform.[4] In 2017, the name of the simulator was changed to GeoFS, due to the change in virtual globe program. In 2018, GeoFS released an "HD" version of the simulator, which costs €9.99 per year, which uses sub-meter Microsoft Bing imagery and is ad-free. GeoFS provides a one-day free trial for the HD version when the user are signed in. The unpaid, non-HD version uses 10-60 meter Sentinel-2 satellite images from Cesium, and contains ads.

Several virtual airlines, alliances, and roleplay groups exist using GeoFS as their main flight simulator. Most have a Discord server as their main form of communication. An official GeoFS Discord server exists and has since gained more than 2,750 members.
