Genghis Grill is a build your own bowl, Mongolian barbecue stir fry concept based out of Dallas, Texas.[1][2] The fast casual restaurant provides an interactive style of exhibition cooking influenced by Genghis Khan’s army, who would cook food on their shields during battle. Customers choose their own proteins, vegetables, sauces, and spices from an open food bar in Khan’s Kitchen. The customer then passes their creation off to the Grill Master, who cooks it on a large, circular grill in just a few minutes.[3]

History

Founded in 1998 by Dallas-based entrepreneur Jeff Sinelli, who also founded Which Wich?, the concept was bought in 2004 by The Chalak Group of Companies [4] who have expanded the company to over 70 locations in 19 states across the country, with plans to reach 100 locations by the end of 2011.[5]

In 2010, Genghis Grill was ranked #3 in Fast Casual Top 100 Movers and Shakers,[6] #5 in Restaurant Business’s Future 50,[7] and listed in Entrepreneur Magazine’s Franchise 500.[8] Genghis Grill was ranked #812 in Inc. 5000.[9] Genghis Grill was ranked in Top 25 Restaurants in Social Media by the Restaurant Social Media Index.[10] In 2011, Genghis Grill’s CEO, Al Bhakta, was ranked in Nation’s Restaurant News Top 10 CEO’s to watch.[11]

Health Kwest campaign

The Health Kwest campaign launched in early 2011, with 48 contestants, known as “Khantestants”, chosen to achieve a healthier lifestyle by eating free Genghis Grill at least once a day for 90 days. Medical City Dallas Hospital provided tips on nutrition and exercise, while Quest Diagnostics tracked each contestant’s weight loss. The winner was chosen by evaluating percentage of weight loss, most online votes, and number of social media posts they recorded. The winner won $10,000.[12]
